BYC SEWING/QUILTING CLUB

There is a couple of things I would change on the next placemat but I am happy with this one. I need to block the lower right side. Got carried away with my machine and made a booboo. I think on the next mat I will add background fabric on the tail maybe an inch or so beyond the feathers before I put on the green borders. Make it look a little more even. It was fun to make. I get so sick of making cat quilts. It's nice to make something different.

I think it is beautiful, but agree it needs background behind the tail feathers.

Looking for help to make baby quilts for the NICU, neo-natal intensive care units

I am looking for baby quilts for the NICU. My daughter, who had premature triplets, spend time there and asked the staff. The NICU staff responded they would love donation quilts. We can bring in the quilts and give them directly to the whomever is on duty that day.

If this is something you can help with it would be great. Some of these babies are in for many months and often times there are time frames the parents can not touch or hold their baby because of issues related to the baby being premature or procedures like being intubated. My daughter was not able to hold 2 of her babies for several days. Fortunately for her it was just days. I found out parents would love to decorate their baby's isolet with a quilt and or use it when they are allowed to hold their little ones.

This is what I am collecting- Durable as well as attractive cotton baby quilts or tops in a variety of sizes for babies in the NICU. Small quilts, about 17 inches x 25 inches to normal size baby quilts about 40 in.x 55 in. are welcome. The sizes are suggestions to give you an idea. Even though most of these babies are in NICU because of prematurity and are tiny some are there because of other needs and are full sized infants as big as 12 lbs.

Finished baby quilts would be wonderful but I can quilt up tops by adding batting and backing. My friends and I are committed to making as many quilts as we can but obviously we can use help. Any fabric or batting donations would be welcome too.

Any finished baby quilts will be delivered to NICU most likely within 1 week. Because my daughter had triplets and obviously still needs a lot of help and support, quilt tops will take a little longer as I will finish them myself.

Items like donated quilts mean a lot to the family of these little ones. Several years ago, I was deeply touched when I saw the tiny clothes and the tiniest knitted caps on my prematurely, 17 weeks, born grandsons. They did not survive but the care and love shown by a stranger to give them dignity for their ever so brief life meant a lot. Some of these quilts will be given to parents whose baby does not survive.

Please PM me or post if you are able to help. Thank you for your help.

I made one already out of 25 5inch squares of kids fabrics. I added a 2 1/2 inch border of kids fabric and then used the turning method by adding flannel backing and thin cotton batting. I then sewed around the edge leaving an opening to turn it. It came out to be 26 inch little quilt and the flannel back and thin batting made it very soft. Maybe later today I will add a picture. I thought maybe some orphan blocks with a border around it might make a nice preemie quilt also.

Here are some quilts I made for donation to preemies in NICU. I used the turning method instead of binding the quilt.

WOW! That's beautiful!

Thought I'd share a couple of pics I took this weekend. My 8 year old granddaughter asked me to teach her to make a quilt. I thought she wanted to make a doll quilt so I brought in a box of old half square triangles I whipped out several years ago and one of my Featherweight machines. As she was pressing the seams, she told me that she didn't want to make a doll quilt, she wanted to make a quilt that her little sister (3 year old Kendra) could use on her lap in her wheelchair or in her car seat. She reminded me that with limited nerves to her legs and no nerves to her feet, Kendra's legs can get cold without her even realizing she IS cold. So back to the drawing board. We went back out to the sewing camper and Katie chose some purples. Then we cut strips and she spent the day learning to use a sewing machine all by herself. Oh, and she thought the Featherweight was cute but she really eyed my Elna. Turned out that was a little better for her to learn on anyway, with the needle down function and being able to set the speed for her.

Katie working on her "Rail Fence" quilt for her baby sister. She wants to give it to Kendra for Christmas.

Pressing seams on the later rejected half square triangles.

And just for grins and giggles, this is my oldest granddaughter when she was 6, making her first quilt. If you've ever visited BigHornQuilts.com, there's a photo of Little Diane with her first quilt there - if the web site is still up. Julie is selling or has sold the business.

Silly little girl. Just attended her wedding last month. Where does the time go?

Blooie, those are such sweet pictures! I wish some of my granddaughters lived closer so I could have taught them to quilt. One has expressed an interest, but she is working on her Master's and holding down a job. Two more are in college and my youngest is only 3! I've made several quilts for all of them and they all love them. The oldest granddaughter is sending me her college softball T-shirts, so I know what will be next! The three boys just love getting them.

Ethan's dinosaur quilt!

The crane quilt was for Kim, who loves everything Japanese.

HS graduation for Victoria. She's 24 now.
This is my oldest grandson, Kaj, appliqued on a quilt. He is holding the actual fish he caught. He loved this quilt. He is 21 now.

These are beautiful! I can see why your grandchildren love them!

Beautiful and creative.

Kassaundra, your Oklahoma star made from neckties is really neat. Is it paper pieced? That was a cool tie with the dragonflies and damselflies on it, and the various colors of the triangles really make it pop! I've never tried anything with neckties before, but I've seen some spectacular quilts made with them. We had a quilter do a "trunk show" at our quilt club in Durant, OK, and she had several made from ties. She also showed us a "Dear Jane" quilt that was just gorgeous. I've made some small blocks, but I'd hate to make a whole quilt from them.
