Non-traditional but polar fleece makes a great backing for a first time quilt. It is forgiving of stitching mistakes and hides them well. It also elimatate the need for batting. I agree a four patch or nine patch might be a good place to start or even a rail fence pattern.

I like fleece, it's warm. I am not picky. I plan on making some fleece, some not, whatever material I get a hold of. If I made fleece that means I don't need batting? That'd be nice.... I'm open to anything. I don't have a themed room or anything, I like pretty much anything and go with the flo. I'll look up the types yall told me

I sometimes use the polar fleece on the back of cotton quilts, then I don't have to use batting. You liked the New Years Eve quilt that I posted, did you look at the directions for that one? http://quiltville.com/stringquiltingprimer.shtml It's fairly easy. I started with 11" squares and trimmed them to 10 1/2" when I was done. You would need to buy or find enough fabric for the background(foundation). That is what makes the diagonal lines in the quilt. But the rest of the strips could be made from old clothing donated by family or friends. There are pictures on that page that also show the quilt without the matching center strip. It is easier to work with all cotton at first, but quilts can be made of other fabrics. It can cause problems when you mix fabrics for the top, as different blends of fabric don't shrink the same when washed. Some of them also don't press or iron well.

That looks hard! How easy was it to get started? So from what I gathered you use 11" fabric squares as the back and sew on strips to it? Or no? Do you have pictures of you working on it?

The pictures on the website would look just like what I would do...in fact theirs are probably better than I can take. Yes, I started with an 11" square of fabric. Did the part where they drew the line on the fabric make sense to you? You could use a regular yardstick to do that.

So I think my first 2 projects are a rag quilt and a strip quilt, whatever the correct terminology is

Hey- I am right down the road from you. If you want to start small and work you way up I have some material you could practice with, and go over to Hancock. We would have to meet in a public place, and if you are a teenager you have to bring your mom, but I probably have enough for you to start a small project. I have some pink and purple for sure.
