Grew up as the eldest of 5 kids in a big country town (which then grew into the small country city I still live in) so being kind of short of cash most of the time, we learnt to recycle before the term was even heard of. Now people tell me I am well off (fairly accurate) and I tell them it's because I don't waste anything unnecessarily.

My MIL found out the Thrift Store would put their overstock in the dumpster on certain nights. She taught my daughter dumpster diving at an early age.
(She wasn't poor, just cheap.)

My Mom is literally the reason why our local dump put up a fence. She took her dumpster diving VERY seriously! I can still smell that nasty stuff we got on our shoes!

Dumpster diving is illegal, but why? It's trash. If I feel I can use it and keep it from a landfill, let me have it.
My mother wouldn't ever dumpster dive, but she would take things out of the model mobile homes we never bought. She told us to do it too because they were "gifts". Word got around about her and we started being followed when viewing the models.
As an adult, we lived in an apartment complex with tons of students. May was my favorite month! You won't believe what they threw out
Even managed to snag a drunk raccoon, just in time, the truck was about 50 feet away.
