If you look closely at the screenshot Nifty posted, it says "days to retain viewed alerts." I would assume that un-viewed alerts would all just keep accruing until the member clicked on it and viewed them, and then they would be subject to the 5 day retention period.

BUT..I have a million alerts and I have not been able to view them all and they are still disappearing after 5 days...viewed or not.

When you look at any Alert, you have looked at any other Alert that was under/older then it was.
Kinda like starting a page of 10 posts in a thread your behind in reading, as soon as you open that page of 10 posts they are marked as if you have done read them, don't matter if you scroll to the last post or not, you have read them.

Yes, those are site-wide settings.

Looks like the likes given and received save in your profile.

For quotes - IMO 5 days is enough - if one doesn't reply to those sometime in one day, then the threads move so fast...no one can remember what it was about anyway

I haven't done anything in articles, but I use command c (to copy)and command v. (To paste)
