Cabinet coop.

We have a huge white cabinet that I wanted to use to make a chicken coop. I was gonna lay it on the growned on back of it and then use the thing to hang clothes as a roost and the shelfs to make nest boxes and then the opening doors would be at the top so you can open and close the whole thing. But ONE problem! what about rain, I was thinking of getting that rain resistant stuff and painting a few layers of it all over, this this will work? or do any of you have any different ideas what I should do to make it rain resistant.

No ideas to help you but I think it sounds like a cool idea! It would look great in you yard!
I heard of someone converting an neat old chest of drawers into nest boxes.
Go for it!

is it made out of ply or MDF?
i would put anything that would help it resist rain.

Really, anything made out of wood or wood product will eventually deteriorate in the weather. Is there a way you could cover the area with tarp? You know the run around the coop? Tarp or something a bit more pretty? Hey, I like tarp!

yes I have thought about tarp also, my dad said that its some sorta wood that will get all mested up because of rain, I need something that I can tell him but he cant put me down. Ok if we get water restiant paint, what are the down sides to it, and with tarp, I need to no the down sides of it so I an figure out some sort of sollution, so I dont get side tracked when i talk to him and he pushes me off about it. this is a one time descussion and it needs to go right or I wont be able to talk to him about it again. As he will simple push me off about it.

MDF and Partical board will just fall apart the first rain..
maybe you can put ply on top of the other wood because you have a frame just take all the wood off the frame of the cabinet and replace it with ply and there you go.

Um, if you didnt know I dont have money to go buy 5 peices of ply wood.

Not only will it deteriorate in the rain, but most likely the cabinet doors are not going to seal well enough when closed so that the rain doesnt seep right in...hate to say it, but I agree with your dad on this one. I found out growing up, that dad was often right when it came to that kind of stuff. Good luck.

Well...we have a "table" of sorts set up outside made of the same stuff. It's an old Kodak shelf from my husband's work, and it's set on sawhorses as my "potting bench". That should be read more like piling area.

Anyway, it does soak up the water, especially near the exposed cuts and seams. But it might last for a while.

I saw an outside bar coated in resin once...the bartender (I did ask!) said it was a "pourable resin." It just looked like a thick, plastic coating. They used it to cover up decoupage, or glued-on paper. I'm not sure if it could be painted on a structure...you could google it.

Otherwise, I would brainstorm and google words like "sealer" "sealant" "protective coatings" "waterproof finish". See what pops up.

You sound like a creative person in general, and I think I know people like your dad. Hang in there. Don't get too discouraged. Busy minds do eventually find a solution.
