CACKLE HATCHERY A BIG NO-NO!!!!!

From what I understand if the chicks arrive dead you MUST open the box at the Post Office and have them document it in order to make a claim to any hatchery. They require proof that they did not make it, otherwise so many would just say their birds arrived dead whether they did or not and ask for money back and I'm sure the hatcheries would go under.
All chicks I have ever ordered from any hatchery have arrived in a few days time and all were healthy and lively. I hope yours are too.

No, you don't have to open the box at the post office. At least I've never had a hatchery question me.

Problem with a bator is you have lots of roos to rehome. If you temps and humidity are off a little you get birds with funny feet or something. Not to be discouraging, but there are pros and cons to everything.

I haven't heard one bad thing about Meyers and the people who answer
the phone are great. JM was good too.

Cackle screwed up our meat bird and duck order so we had to cancel.
I can't speak about the quality of their birds but their service seems to
be the worst of the hatcheries.

No experience with Cackle, but a couple of people mentioned Ideal and deformed birds. The feed mills here order from Ideal. Of the 21 chicks I bought this year, one died, one was crossbeaked and died, one was spraddle legged (it was actually given to me by the feed mill since it had problems-she lived and legs are better, but she hops more than walks), and one had that mal-absorption syndrome thing and died. I would much prefer Murray McMurray or someone else. I'm hoping to just buy from some folks off here next time I get birds.

I think I may have posted something about getting deformed birds from Ideal. I got a banty that had toes and legs terrible curled almost like someone curled them with a curling iron. It died shortly after arrival. I also posted about loosing the whole batch from them and the over charge and then double charging me and then keeping my money for a period of time before I ended up just calling the bank. I will not order from them again unless they are the only ones out there to get chicks from. The chicks I got from them are less than par. And several of them died after arrival. In my regular size girls i think I ordered 10, 15 and 5 the ones still kicking are about 5, 5 and 3. I ordered from Mt. Healthy they got here in ONE day and all 200 are doing great still. The ones I ordered from Hoovers all 27 are still alive and growing big girl feathers now. Everyone has different ideas of who to order from. I tried going with the several had said was good and for me it turned really bad. I have ordered from McMurray before the sickness issues but that was years ago. When I read they had issues to resolve I felt I did not want to chance ordering from them this year.
I do hope you get your issues with the chicks you ordered resolved.....

Ordering chicks from a hatchery or incubating them yourself is always a gamble.
Some batches are good and some are bad. Spraddle legs and other deformities
are normal, unfortunately.

Every hatchery will have issues from time to time. Cackle just seems to have an
ongoing problem with communications, cancelled and uncomfirmed orders, and
rude customer service reps.

Remember a person who has a problem will tell at least 7 people. Happy customers
may tell 1 person. It's human nature to complain more than praise.

I will NEVER order from cackle again. They not only messed up my order, TWICE, but they sent me the wrong birds, changed shipping dates without my knowledge and will NOT refund my money. It took me days to get a response out of them, and the one I did get was rude. I told them NOT to ship me any bantams, and what do I get? A box full of bantam chicks, and I ordered polish and they send me all cochins! All the birds, mostly the bantams, I got from them were ill and died. I had them mixed in with chicks I hatched and not one of the chicks I hatched has died it's all their birds. I had birds from them dieing 2 weeks later for no reason what so ever. I know when you order from a hatchery you expect a few to die, but I lost literally my whole order from them within 2 weeks. I contacted them and they said they would send me another order. I talked to about 3 people, and got both phone and email confirmations telling me what my order was and they still mess up! I contacted them once again and they will not refund me for birds I did not even order! They said they would send out more birds again, but I do not want any of their birds!

We'll talk more about this on Sunday. I didn't know how bad it was. Did they refund
you for the Cornish X's you ordered?
