I am sorry for your struggles. However, trust me HenAddiction, you do not wish you had ordered from MM. What happened to us last February and March was infinitely worse than what you are experiencing. After our family has ordered chicks from MM for over 50 years, we will never, and I mean NEVER, order from them again.

I strongly recommend a small hatchery or better yet, a breeder.

Okay, I'm new to all this, although I have bred and raised and shown pigeons, parakeets and doves for many years.

And I have gone through some struggles with the pigeons especially in building my housing for them. I have not ordered any chicks yet as I am still trying to decide which breed I want to raise. My biggest problem is that according to the local ordinances I can only have 1 rooster and up to 4 hens as far as poultry goes.

But all the catalogues I have so far state minimum order is 25 chicks.

So unless I can find somebody locally here I will have to order from a hatchery and figure out what to do with the extra chicks. But judging from the various comments I have read, perhaps it would be better to plan a trip to a hatchery and pick up my chicks in person.

As to the post office, they can be funny about shipping live animals. In order to ship our fish to our shows, we have to mark them as lab specimens or something similar. I have no use for PETA, what started out as something good has turned into guerilla run organization, not caring about anybody's rights but rather their own agenda.

I may try to get up to the Indiana Central Poultry show in a few weeks and see what is up.

I love Cackle Hatchery birds. I ordered all my hens from them and the girls were very polite when I ordered and my order came on time. My Dominiques are all very much to standard with the correct Dominique comb- 2 of them are show birds. The chicks were all healthy, alert and the confirmation and dispositions were excellent.

I'm so sorry to hear that anyone has had a terrible experience with Cackle. They called me the day they shipped my birds and as far as I know that used to be their stand SOP.

Many times (especially in the spring) local feed stores will let customers order just a few chicks, and then group several customers' orders to meet the 25-chick minimum. That lets you order just how few or many you want.
This time of year, it is harder to get chicks from most anywhere. I highly recommend going to a chicken show to get chickens if you can. Some shows have a chicken auction close to the end of the show. You can learn about different breeds and learn to identify various levels of quality by talking to people at the show and looking at placings. Chickens you buy there are likely to be in good health. You can often talk to the breeder of particular chickens you are interested in and find out about their particular traits. The best part is just looking at all those chickens and hanging out with all those chicken people

Not all here.....but the majority seem to be pleased with the chicks they ordered from Cackle. I know they could communicate a bit better with the customer, but are they getting a bad rap in this thread? Or the titlle of the thread? Just wondering.........

We ordered from Cackle and had lousy customer service too. The chicks got lost on the way and our postman drove 1 1/2 hours to another postoffice to pick them up.
They also left out 5 of what we ordered.

But.... the babies got here (thanks to the postman!) and they are truly beautiful and thriving.

Would we order from them again? I don't know , but they are all so healthy and doing so well that it really counts for something.
