Cackle hatchery's Hatchery Surprise- Anybody got this before?

Pics
I'll be getting my box next week. I have a couple questions you guys could help me with. I've never ordered chicks in the mail before.

1. Do I open the box at the post office?
2. How does this work with the guarantee? If I open the box and 5 of them are dead, will cackle send me 5 more, or how does that work? Their guarantee policy doesn't mention anything about the surprise box. Anyone have experience with that before?
it looks like from reading cackle website they'll replace or refund money for any chicks lost within 3 days of you getting them.

and i dont think you need to open the post unless cackle has told you that or you want to.

I've never opened our boxes at the post office. If the box seem extremely quiet, you probably should open it there. I usually open them in the car because I can't wait to get home.

I'm not sure how they handle just a few losses for the surprise, we only had a couple of losses last year so we didn't report them. I'm pretty concerned with the cold weather they were having last night when the chicks shipped out but crossing fingers they all make it!

Ok, thanks! One more question, when I go to the PO, do I need to bring anything? Like a print out of the order or something?

I am worried about the little ones in that cold weather myself.

How often are you refreshing the tracker page Slip?

lmao I think my mouse and F5 about had it. :)

I am tracking my surprise and my Black Copper Maran Hatching Eggs.

I've always received a phone call when they've arrived at the post office, even if its before they open. You might need an ID depending on your post office, I think I was asked once. They usually just ask your name/address to verify they are giving you the right box, scan it and you're good to go. If they call you before regular hours, ask them where you need to go to pick them up.

i never have..i just go to the PO when they call and once there they grab my box of chicks and give the box a final scan and hand the box over and then i'm done and i go home.

Mine hasn't updated since 10:25 last night...which isn't unheard of but still has me wondering where they are.

My husband has been checking temps on their new brooder.
We making sure we are stock piled with chick starter and game bird starter for possible turkeys and geese.
I checked the availability sheet for cackle and noticed that it changes daily and what we think we could be getting could be completely different.

Ahhh the suspense is killing me.

I get the phone call EARLY, usually the man has a desperate tone in his voice

I race to the post office and they have me open the box. I have my cell phone camera available to take pics if needed. Once Cackle put the wrong label on my box and I accidentally got a box of turkeys (oh darn) and once the po smashed my box into a pancake. Both times I took pics.

With regular orders Cackle always puts in extra chicks. I have never had more chicks die than the extras so I don't know. I assume that if it is only a few birds they will refund your money since they can't just ship five birds safely.

Ok, so after reading a non-related post, I'm a little worried...Usually there is some sort of updated information by this point. Another thread said that due to bad weather the chicks were sent back to the hatchery, this was from another hatchery and from this past weekend...I know the weather was going to be cold at the Cackle Hatchery but I didn't actually check to see if it was going to be icy/nasty. I don't remember the route our order took a couple of weeks ago from Cackle but I do know that our friends in Tennessee had really bad ice storms...
