Cackle over McMurray???

I lost 5 MM chicks right away, and they were mostly the same breeds. I think that had to do with the strain, not necessarily the hatchery. MM did credit me, so overall, I did not have a bad experience with them.

When using cackle do you call them or order online?

Im finding it difficult to navigate their site. Im also having a generaly hard time finding either black stars or rhode island reds that are available in may.

I am a neophyte so I'm not sure how valid my comments on this subject are. Personally I would look at how far the chicks have to be shipped and would lean towards a hatchery closer to where I live.
I have heard good things about McMurray but when looking at their prices they seem a little expensive.
I just go 54 chicks that came from Cackle through a local farm supply store. The order was for 50 so I got a 4 chick bonus. I have had them for a week and all are still alive, no losses. So right now I am happy with Cackle.
After frustrations this spring trying to buy from farm supply stores I am leaning towards dealing direct with the hatchery next time. But on the other hand the farm store seems to have a better price. Not sure why unless hatcheries sell wholesale even with small (50) quantities.
I am not happy with another hatchery. I lost 12 chicks out of 50 and the farm store told they where straight run heavy and in reality they were cornish cross pullets (dumb me). The problems were probably as much my fault as the hatchery and the store.
So, at this early stage in the chicken business I am happy with Cackle and am learning all the time.

I ordered Araucanas from Mt. Healthy hatchery is March and they were very healthy and are great birds. I haven't heard anyone mention Mt. Healthy. Does anyone else have experience with them?

I've been ordering from MMH for over 20yrs. Every time I try someone else, I go straight back to MMH. The chicks I've gotten have always been healthy. I've gotten everything from chickens to ducks, turkeys and geese. Love them!

Try calling your local extention office and finding a local farmer or breeder that will givr you eggs. We live near McMurray hatchery and have had great luck with our 3 day old cornish rock cross chickens. My girls use them for fair meat pens.
