Calcium

yes most laying hens need added calcium. I use ground oyster shell. You can buy it with the chicken feed or depending on your quail you can get the stuff for cage birds that is ground finer, great for buttons.
they also need vitamin d to absorb the calcium correctly just like humans do. That is why they need full spectrum lighting. ie: sunlight
 
If they're on a back porch that is covered (no direct sunlight) will that be enough to provide the vitamin D needed?
