Calf Feeding Question *Update on Phillip*

Now I learned the hard way you can actually overfeed a young calf by giving them a full bottle.
My vet told me to cut down the amount and feed more often. I cut it down to a 1/4 a feeding and did it 5 times a day. A real pain, but he was doing better until he bloated on us when I was gone.

OMG!!! I am totally out of my skin right now!! I just got off the phone with a lady that runs a local museum/working farm place and they have a nanny heifer!!!! She just recently calved and they took the baby away.

She said No charge, 3 months should be fine, we take him up to meet his (hopefully) new momma tomorrow morning!!!

Keep your fingers crossed everyone!!!

I'm so dang excited

Me too, I just did a happy dance through the kitchen when i got off the phone with the lady. 2 people said she's a wonderful nanny cow and even adopted her grand daughter last year. she's also been crying for her calf so i am hopeful

The big Jersey dairy near me feeds their calves 3 quarts of milk twice a day. If a calf is lethargic and doesn't want to eat, chances are it's sick. What is his temperature?

Phillip went to meet his foster momma this morning, a Very cute, sweet Jersey heifer names "Rain". She took him immediately, she was actually trying to reach over the fence for him, lol.

I waited while we tried to get him to use a bottle with her fresh milk in it but he refused again. We finally moved him in with her and he started looking for her udder after he calmed down. She was Really trying to get him back there too, it was really cute.

He hadn't suckled before I left but they were going to call me if he latched onto her.

I got a call about 20 minutes ago & they told me he latched on for about 4-5 good drinks! I asked them to give me a call before they left for the day, just to make sure he's ok, but I am probably going to leave him for the night since he did latch on and suck a couple times. He knows what to do, just needs to keep doing it!

I couldn't thank her enough the whole time i was there. It is a working farm & museum. They have kids out there all the time learning how to care for the animals and milk the cow so it should be a good experience for everyone. They just thought he was the cutest little thing, of course they asked him name right away and i explained why he was named "Phillip" and they just laughed. I hope the little brat keps suckling from her, i really don't knwo what i am going to do if he doesn't figure it out. right now i am just thankful to have found such wonderful people to help.

I forgot my camera at home or I would have got a picture of Phillip & Rain..maybe when we go see him next.

ETA: We also found a good pet home for Owen & Avery. A local couple that wanted 2 to keep as pets & to help keep the pasture down, VERY happy with that outcome. Avery was a bit blah again this morning so we called the guy back and gave him the Electrolyte recipe but told him to let us know how he does...I think if he doesn't make it (he is still pretty young & fragile) we might find another calf for the guy.

I think Owen is too "bull headed" to be sick at all.. not that im complaining or anything though!!

His wife is also a Grays Anatomy fan so i think they'll keep the names, lol.
