you're right- it is hard to find! i tried to search for it, and i got everything but what i was looking for!

Hey there! I know a few of you already. ( Hi, Naomi!)
I found this thread hoping to find some breeds I want by doing a search...and read this.
Anyhow I too am disappointed that it is so hard to find anything in California. I guess I am a tad more bummed at the moment because I have searched high and low for some really good quality breed stock of Marans. Well I thought I found somebody who had a ton of different Marans. All of which I wanted and I was willing to do anything to get myself over to where I thought he said he was from. Auburn ( which would be a 5- 6 hr or more drive)..well after days of conversing and etc..and then talking with him on the ph..he tells me he is from Auburn, Oklahoma!! Somehow between the emails and conversing back and forth that was never really mentioned? Or got lost or ?? I guess Silly me!

Tina thanks for posting the other sites on where you got some of your birds that is helpful!

You can find some of the chickens you are looking for from feed stores if you don't care about breeding etc. EE's lay grn/blue eggs and I think you maybe able to find silver laced Wyandottes too. HTH.
I feel your pain on not finding plentiful bird choices here.

Thanks again Tina. This was really helpful!
I hear you about the Ameraucana and yeah, i know about the pure breed being rare. I might give up on finding pure ones because I have no plans for breeding and really, am just trying to get pretty eggs at this point. I guess i was going for the purer breeds because I thought that the egg colors would be better... (I've heard that's the trouble with Barnevelders. The ones in the States don't have the real dark color that they are supposed to be known for. And with the Ameraucanas i was thinking i might get the bluer color instead of the light green.)

Am thinking now if i really want a dark egg layer, maybe I should try a Welsummer even thought their temperment is not as docile as the Barnevelder. And I love my Easter Eggers. I have two and we've name them Laverne and Shirely. They crack me up.

The only one I think I definitely would want from a breeder is a silver-laced wyndotte. Mainly for the feather pattern. But if I can't fine one here... am thinking I'll just get a Barred Rock from the feed store.

Anyway.. thanks for giving me an excuse to think outloud. :lol:vI'll email that lady and see if she has any welsummers for sale.

Yikes! Uhg. How frustrating....
Yeah, i'm not really sure why California is so bare of breeders. Then again.. I tend to wonder if they are out there and just hiding! I think i'll keep looking.

Have you thought about hatching eggs?

There is an Auction in Roseville California as well, on certain days of the month. (I can find out if you like, Ive been there before)

CAUTION. The poultry is exposed to ???? and you MUST quarantine or risk bringing disease to your flock. I am NOT the most paranoid person in the world, but just go once, and you'll get it. There are some beautiful birds there sometimes??? You need to know your birds/breeds - but they are at auction for a reason, and how are you to know what the reason is????

Owner getting rid of it because:

It is an egg eater, they have too many birds, they like to sell pretty birds, it is sick, it needs a home, the owners died, they lost their property...your guess is as good as mine???? See, its a gamble. How bad do you want that bird?

Now, about those Barnevelders. I WILL have some someday, because they are on my WISHLIST. I will hatch the eggs myself, because that is what I do, I get the eggs, and I hatch them. If you keep in touch with me, and I have a decent hatch (I like to keep at least 3-4 hens and 1 rooster) out of the eggs I get and the chicks I hatch - you can have little Barnevelders!! I dont have a definite ETA on my eggs yet, just a promise so far, but thats good enough for me!! We'll meet up somewhere by you some day, because I travel down to the bay area and such for my work sometimes! But that would be later on this year if you were still interested? Let me know sometime?

Tina

Yeah, talk about feeling like an idiot! Well a sad idiot..haha. Anyway, I don't have a incubator and was trying to avoid one but it seems if CA is so limited I would eventually succomb to it. All us Californians will all have to keep in touch and network. Here is what I will have someday in the near future some nice looking silkies ( when I find a roo for them) and some Cuckoos eggs in 6 months -right now they are chickies. Oh also they other more common birds in my siggy. I am only 25mins south of SC. I am also on CA Chickens yahoo group too as Cherryblsm. Oh I think I saw someone on SFBay area Craigslist selling some more uncommon birds.

I live up near Chico, and havent had a problem getting lots of chickens of nearly any variety over a period of time....or getting the eggs I want eventually and hatching them. Yeah, there are poor quality eggs even...live and learn, I love BYC and you learn who knows what theyre talking about on here too!

But keep looking around - it takes patience and searching, they're out there - millions of really nice chickens right here in California, and most likely enthusiastic people willing to share them!

Here is Tina Cardin's Craigslist ad from yesterday, for example. I have gotten several birds from her, given many to her (she takes the roosters back?) Want something she doesnt have? Let her know?
