Quote: I want something that will grow fast, which would lead you to running. But I also don't want to cover the earth (and I know me, I would not do the work involved in cutting runners, trenches, etc.), so that would point to clumping. I need something that will go 8ish feet and probably need to cover in an area around 20 feet wide (or so). We let the alpacas browse an area and now it's denuded of leaves between us and the neighbors. I want to plant on my side of the fence (opposite of where the animals graze).

a few clumpers. alphonse karr or golden goddess. 8-13 feet tall. shorter in the sun usually. hardy to 13 . below that the will defoliate but come back. I had one that did this December of 09. we hit 6 degrees one night and 12 another. Of course most of it was laying under 27 inches of snow.

Running kinds generally only stay where they are watered and will not venture into unwatered areas. In dry spots you can use a soaker hose or bubblers on drip. or 2 trenches and flood irrigate. Also Goats love Bamboo . so plant them near a fence with goats and whatever gets into a watered pasture quickly gets eaten. Hardy running kind are Golden , and black. ( black does best with some shade) these kinds get huge.
I love arrow it is a dense screen and takes anything. I can probably get divisions from my friend. It runs but is not super aggressive and stays below about 12 feet. Golden and Black can get to 30 or more.

My favorite site is a young chicken that jumps up to grab a Bamboo leaf then decides to not let go and dangles around for a minute or two.
Priceless.

This sounds great. It just needed to be at least 8 ft to block the line of sight, but bigger would be better. Mostly I'm looking for dense. Our alpaca and our sheep (dorpers) graze and browse, so they should keep it under control.

How does one enter a show? I think I would have fun showing Black Betty. What do you think? :D Do I have to do some sort of testing? I would put her in a small dog kennel right? Curious how all that works. I would put her under the Orp category right? It would be SO fun to see if she places at all. I don't know. Just toying with the idea since I am going to be there anyway. LOL

And bought a Golden Feather membership too. :D

Loving this gorgeous weatherrrrr!

She is sure a looker.... Great Picture
