So what's been hatching around here this week.................
4 paint showgirls and 2 paint silkies

Silkies/showgirls (blues and partridge and ? porcelain maybe)

The two blue showgirls

A RIR

Icelandics

Bantam barred rocks

Serama

Dang, two of them were more FRIZZLES!

And what has my mantra been for months.....................................NO NEW BREEDS!

I guess I meant to say after the Columbian Rocks.

Four more eggs in lockdown or going soon. Just in time for the set for NYD tomorrow! I need to start paying people to let me hatch for them, so I'll stop hatching for myself! And I won't discuss the other new breed I have coming in the spring............... I either need more pens or have to decide to part with something I have

lol...

Yes, they will be ok. For Breeding, move the boys into the pen with the girls for an hour each afternoon. You have to do this if your ratio of hens to roos is too small. Of course you could get saddles for them but oh my! Ok not going to say more about that....

haha, yes, Party Girls for sure :) I am hoping for lots of eggs !!! Also some of my chicks will go.. cant keep them all for sure! I also bought some eggs right at the start ( this is my second go round with silkies I had them up until about 8 yrs ago and am getting re-established) Figured this time I would have a few pets lol! That lasted until I hatched my first eggs! :) So set about finding some that were going to get me going more quickly. I DID end up with a few from good breeders that someone else hatched and i bought. Even most of those are gone because I cut back on colors as well. Like you I ended up rehoming most of them. I decided to buy some from good breeders to make pairs/trios of the colors I am breeding. I am only set up to keep 15-30 birds reasonably. My boys are in the coop but I rotate them out in a separate pen . I will be sorting out who to keep with who in the spring. It wont hurt them to stay in. When mine are in the coop i usually leave the door and windows open so they get some fresh air. Two boys in a 2x4 all the time is pretty small so I would try and get them out some or make up a larger portable pen in the garage for daytime and let them sleep in the small one.
Thanks, I just started the 1-hour visitations today. I figured the boys had been with the girls a couple hours earlier so put them in a make-shift pen (made from that green garden fencing). It worked great, but you should have heard the strange noises and back-n-forth pacing by the confused roosters!

And, I think I'll build a bigger garage pen. Eventually it will be called the bachelor pad. Every time these silkies become a problem (and I consider selling them)...I discover a solution. My poor son may never have a peaceful nights sleep again.

You got it!

I have 8 chicks from the hatch. 6 are CL X Penne and two are OE X Barnie.

Here are a couple of pictures of three of the CL X Pennes.

They are supposed to be auto sexing but I do not know if that is by the brown vs the darker color or if it is by the little dot on some of their heads.

I bet Deane could tell me.
I am gonna be in the bay area tomorrow. was gonna try and see if I can pin Deann down and grab a few eggs. She is real busy with her christmas tre lot though. That is why she has not been on here much.

Ron if the Trader Joes free range white eggs are leghorns what are the brown layers? Sex Links or RiR ?

I have not seen brown eggs from TJs. The teenager that did the experiment could not get any brown eggs to hatch from the other stores. TJs white eggs were the only ones that hatched and yes, the brown eggs from the other stores are Sex links. The TJs leghorns are an actual breed, Commercial Leghorns. I wouldn't want to hatch the brown ones...well you know me...I probably would hatch them if I thought there was a chance thy would hatch....but then I am a hatcha holic LOL.

X2, it is my understanding that TJs does not sell brown fertile eggs.

I told Amy not to expect the little pink circle on the eggs either....If it were spring, they would be laying at any time too.
