California - Northern

Looking forward to what you find out.  I am getting Birchen and Blue CM eggs this spring.  I have never had much luck with Marans eggs, even when I picked the up.

I have trouble with marans too and I have my own. From 3 different lines. I think fcbms have egg issues because of the egg color selection. Plus they come from limited stock in the us. I know some people have no issues at all but I can get high 90% for silkies but never for marans.

I expect to see the same issues pop up in a lot of the news import lines that descend for 5-10 chickens.

How are you all? I'm hoping it gets to be less of a muddy mess this week.

Jason, congrats on your new place! Those trees are so beautiful.

Pam, thanks for the link for those signs. I love several of them. Would they rust if put outside on a coop?

Jersey, let me know if you decide to show, so I can look for your birds. It's always fun to see entries from people that I know.

Ron, did you read what they are discussing on the Heritage thread- about temperature of stored eggs? It's interesting. Bentley was saying that the embryos are developing from the time that they are fertilized and how much temp fluctuations affect viability. Interesting stuff that I never thought about, since I don't incubate eggs. I know that you love information, so thought it might be of interest.

I do not read any of the Heritage threads.

What I know, is that the embryo divides several times and when it cools, it goes into a dormant state. During that time while you are waiting to incubate, the eggs should be kept in a moist place, not too cold. They should be tilted with the large end up in an egg tray and turned several times a day. It is important to wash your hands too since viruses and such are bad for them. It is also a good idea to warm them up gently before putting them into the incubator. This is a picture the eggs I collected from my hens waiting to be incubated:

I collected one more day and set 12. 2 were not fertile(SG Dorking Pullet was not too friendly with Corwin) 10 developed and 9 hatched.

How the eggs are treated during collection is the middle part of the things needed for a good hatch. The first part is about the rooster and the hens and the third part is about how you incubate them. I have seen a guide--it was part of the Easter Hatch-a-long last year. I will find it and get it to you.

Most definitely.
It sounds like several of the posters on this thread are going to take a look or show. It's turning into a 'California-Northern' thread meet, huh? lol.

Hi, if anyone can home a Lt Braham very friendly rooster I need to re-home. I have followed this site and its so helpful. Being a new chicken owner, I read a lot but have not posted too much. Not yet crowing but "gender" forum has confirmed she "Melia" is a he, guess he is now Meleko. Comes running everytime and will sit with you. Would like to keep him but its not allowed here. He is also listed under rehome for free forum. I'm so sad about this cause I only have three and now will have two. Here's his pic.
It is great to have you here!

Good luck rehoming. Some where in the Bay area there is a feed store that will take Roos.

Okay, what do you do when you have been saving eggs. Realize you aren't going to set them (too old now anyway), don't want to eat them (you have plenty of fresher eggs to eat), but don't want to waste them (think 300+ willing chicken mouths).

Break a few eggs (probably 20-30 dozen, maybe more, there were quite a few quail eggs involved too)

Filled this 9x13 pan almost to the brim 3 times

Bake & cool a bit

Cut into squares (almost look tasty if I didn't know how careless I was being with shells, dirty eggs, etc.)

Toss several squares to each run and have MANY happy chickens.

That is very ingenious!

Have you dehydrated them? After grinding, they take up very little space.

What a wonderful idea! I scramble "old" or broken eggs up for my chickens but probably won't ever have enough for a casserole-WOW! I always top them off with cayenne pepper and garlic.
