Nope, I don't bother keeping them around. I had LOTS of extra eggs, after baking they were consumed within minutes. I used to boil my eggs, cool them, then squish them up shell and all, this is much faster. You could break the shell into the casserole too, but I just buy oyster shell in 50# bags.

I do lots of dehydrating (fruits, veggies, leathers, most of my own herbs), I don't think eggs is something I'd bother with.

Awsome idea Deb,
I have been fighting a cold the last couple of days. Today I got coop #1 at the new place.
Only 5x6 but wore me down moving it. It is semi level and I need to finish that and stain tomorrow. Plus build the 40x15 run
I had him tweak the design somewhat.
Oh and I need to add some roosts

I am using some extra Trex deck pieces to put under the wood so not to have contact with the ground. I may pour a concert floor as well.
This was tough to move. May be easier to build my own. For the next 4.

WOW! I bet the chooks would devour that treat too.

Okay, what do you do when you have been saving eggs. Realize you aren't going to set them (too old now anyway), don't want to eat them (you have plenty of fresher eggs to eat), but don't want to waste them (think 300+ willing chicken mouths).

Break a few eggs (probably 20-30 dozen, maybe more, there were quite a few quail eggs involved too)

Filled this 9x13 pan almost to the brim 3 times

Bake & cool a bit

Cut into squares (almost look tasty if I didn't know how careless I was being with shells, dirty eggs, etc.)

Toss several squares to each run and have MANY happy chickens.

ok, my flock of 12 are going to have to say goodbye to their all-female existence -- picked up a beautiful swedish flower hen rooster, 11 months old, from Deann this afternoon -- i think i'll call him Max:

hello handsome!

the girls are quite perplexed -- half of them are mad (especially frances the most-dominant SPPR and eleanor the basque, who's most-dominant of the younger flock), the other half are in love (especially Daisy the australorp)

dixie and ethel do not look particularly impressed...

thank you, Deann! Max bounced all around the run, pecking at things and crowing a few times and looking totally bewildered -- hung around for a while after all the girls went up into their henhouse to sleep, but eventually followed them. will see what everyone thinks of the arrangement tomorrow morning!

Gorgeous addition to the flock!

Hello everyone.

I have a Blue Silkie hen, who is 1 1/2 years old. It seems that she was born to be a "Walking Incubator"!

Here is a link to my thread that explains in detail. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/732516/i-have-a-dilemma#post_10170357

Anyways, I'm looking for a new home for her (and her daughter), where she can brood to her little hearts content. I love broody hens, but frankly, I have too many already!

Let me tell you a bit about them,
Minnie, is a year and a half old, blue Silkie hen, who loves to brood. She's hatched three batches of chicks, within the last year. Dixi is one of her chicks from the batch before last. Minnie is a dominant hen, and likes to be on top of the pecking order. She is shy but loves being held. She loves any kind of treat, and will eat them up fast.

The only problem, is I have only gotten 7 eggs from her and those eventually became chicks.

I've had her since February.

Dixi, is a 6 month old Silkie/Star? mix. She is a sweet hen, who lays a tan colored egg every other day, except in the winter. She has trouble seeing sometimes, because of her huge crest. Dixi isn''t a dominant pulet, and gets bossed around by my little D'uccle hen to is 2 times smaller than she is!

Dixi, likes being held, but is very shy.

If you can give Minnie and Dixi a home, please PM me.

Thanks!

They will all love him in a week or so!

Get him some SFH pullets and join the hatching fun!

Looking forward to what you find out.  I am getting Birchen and Blue CM eggs this spring.  I have never had much luck with Marans eggs, even when I picked the up.

I have really good luck with my Marans .. They are free ranging now but in about a month I will be putting them back in breeding pens. I have black copper, BBS and Golden Cuckoo. I like them all but, I think my favorite are the Golden Cuckoo Marans. They will be the first to go back into a breeding pen. :)
