California - Northern

Awsome idea Deb,
I have been fighting a cold the last couple of days. Today I got coop #1 at the new place.
Only 5x6 but wore me down moving it. It is semi level and I need to finish that and stain tomorrow. Plus build the 40x15 run
I had him tweak the design somewhat.
Oh and I need to add some roosts

I am using some extra Trex deck pieces to put under the wood so not to have contact with the ground. I may pour a concert floor as well.
This was tough to move. May be easier to build my own. For the next 4.
That is a really nice coop, your land is beautiful - and I still love your big trees. Not so fond of the deer though - I like my fruit trees untrimmed!

Can the coops be dismantled for easier moving/pre-leveling? Since you are up in the forest you might want that concrete pad - so nothing can dig underneath and get in.... just to be on the safe side. When I see deer I also think bobcats, mountain lions...

ok, my flock of 12 are going to have to say goodbye to their all-female existence -- picked up a beautiful swedish flower hen rooster, 11 months old, from Deann this afternoon -- i think i'll call him Max: hello handsome! the girls are quite perplexed -- half of them are mad (especially frances the most-dominant SPPR and eleanor the basque, who's most-dominant of the younger flock), the other half are in love (especially Daisy the australorp) dixie and ethel do not look particularly impressed... thank you, Deann! Max bounced all around the run, pecking at things and crowing a few times and looking totally bewildered -- hung around for a while after all the girls went up into their henhouse to sleep, but eventually followed them. will see what everyone thinks of the arrangement tomorrow morning!
Years ago when I first got chickens I said I would never get a Rooster. I would never go without a Rooster again. I LOVE my roosters... "LOVE THEM," Your rooster is beautiful. He will make great babies..

ok, i set 4 more eggs from my LF choc split project... hoping these are fertile. I'll collect the eggs from now until I come down Miss Molly. If these are fertile then I'll bring a few eggs your way. fingers crossed!

Max is gorgeous - I would love to have one that looks like him.

Just can't do it right now.

Hey Ron, you always have really cute emoji... Where do you find them? Is it a app I can buy?

I find them and then upload the web link using the picture tool. The emoticon stays in my recently added images and I insert them from there. I also get some of the big ones from Bing. I type in chicken smiley and there is a link to them.

I get others from a Basque website. There was also a project here to add more default smileys and people posted a bung of cool ones that I grabbed.

They are fun to use!

Yes I plan on using sand on the bottom. I am going to put the rest of my stucco wire on the bottom and staple it to the sides. Then add the sand.
Stucco wire is super strong should keep anything from digging up through it.
As far as the deer attracting Bobcats and Mountain Lions. I am ok with the Deer here. It will keep the big critters away from the chickens.
I am going to have a big fence around the the coops and runs and will be putting a flood light out there as well I think. Behind the coops so everytime a chicken moves it will not set it off.

I have really good luck with my Marans .. They are free ranging now but in about a month I will be putting them back in breeding pens. I have black copper, BBS and Golden Cuckoo. I like them all but, I think my favorite are the Golden Cuckoo Marans. They will be the first to go back into a breeding pen.

Your Golden Cuckoo's are really nice and they are Auto sexing.

Hubby was feeling sunshine deprived this morning so we went to the coast. Sunshine was great but the breeze was cold after awhile.

Didn't realize it was full moon and high tide either, oh well.
