Quote: The pattern is very similar, isn't it? They are a bit larger than serama and certainly have a bigger voice. I was surprised.

Thanks, I just love them.

I got them from chooklet.

They had been on my want list too, I was pretty happy to get them.

Yeah and they are goo egg layers we only have one tai hen and she went broody and hatched eggs in november, amd we cant even get our other hens to lay eggs lol

We got our first eggs 2 days ago!! but... we didn't get any eggs today or yesterday. The chickens free range during the day and we found the eggs under a board that was leaning up against the back of our house. There were 7 eggs there. Do you think they got mad that I took the eggs and moved their laying spot? And why in the leaves and not the coop/laying boxes?
They do that when they start out. Sometimes they do that later too. The best thing to do is to put some fake eggs in the nest box. That fools them into thinking the eggs belong there. Eventually they will figure out where to lay the eggs.

Silly Chickens!
Quote: With all the money you have spent so far, I will take the risk but if they hatch you can have first pick of the chicks.
Quote: Yes! We need to figure out what Kim wants with the Delawares and I will get something to make it to 25.

I want more black penedesenca. I can only get 10 it sounds like. Elias is going to try and send me a rooster too. On the Emp's but this may be pricy as I have to send my box to him and pay to have it returned. Very much worth it though. Also at least this way they will be unrelated to my girls

Quote: I have some friends that sail in SF bay, their boat is The Cappuccino, they do a lot of racing. Her name is Mary Lou, really nice people.
I took pictures last night of my NYE hatch. I set quite the hodge podge.

OK, I'm ready for chicks! The next hen that squaks at me when I'm collecting eggs gets to stay put!
Quote: Thank you for the info. These boys are not staying, they're from my true Ameraucana roo and one of my hens and they're going to be rehomed or dinner for someone. I still need to figure out which hen, but want to know what they have to offer because I think they're nice birds and hate to see them go on a dinner plate but I don't need another EE roo.

I got 6 Blue Marans from Jeff/Papabrooder and ended up losing all but 2 pullets (long story). I'll be using them and my Ameraucana roo for olive eggers but was hoping for a Blue Marans Roo to breed with my EE's and see what I got in the reverse. Isn't funny that when you want a cockerel you don't get one!

I'm trying to keep all this info offered here on BYC so that I can figure out what I'm doing

. I've been just letting broodies hatch and gathering information on who gives what. I've bred dogs and horses seriously but not chickens so I've just got my toes in the water. I've paid more attention to my Polish and just wanted color in my layer eggs but then I got into the Marans and that dang dark egg! Which way do I go, which way do I go....

Has anyone tried using rice hulls instead of pine shavings? I deal with a woman who insists that wood shavings bring lice into her flock and swears by rice hulls. I've never had lice/mite problems. In order to prevent problems I offer her my birds for inspection - she's never found anything - but it still annoys me. She claims that the rice hulls are easy clean like cat litter. I just have a problem with the bag size.

Hmmmm. Good question. I've never tried rice hulls. I like pine shaving though. Never had a problem with those.
