California - Northern

It was 30 here this morning. My Accuweather App said it was 34. They did predict 30 so that was correct but the realtime part failed. Accuweather says we will be 30 again tomorrow and 28 on Sat and Sun. It will probably be 24 though, which is about as cold as it gets in Woodland.

30° here this morning too, although now it's "warmed up" to 32 -- forecast was 37. everything's all white with frost, and the cats came in after a brief outdoor excursion, complaining of cold paws. I've been frantically writing a long memo that HAD to go out this morning, but am taking some kale & yogurt to the coop now & will refill their corid-water...

We got ours from a guy in Tehachapi, but since we are not in that area anymore, I have no clue when he will have pups again.

I think this guy has the pup but is looking to see if anyone is driving down to so cal. From redding?

I can check to see if dh is going that way anytime soon, but he only goes part way and you'd still have to get it to San Jose or Oakland.

Sally Sunshine on the NYD Hatch-a-long thread had chickens eat the spray foam off of their hot tub. They died and someone posted that one of theirs ate it and it dissolved the hens tongue. It was dead the next morning.

The foam kills them fairly quickly it seems.

I am going to get some Organic Alfalfa pellets and see how it works.

I have some organic alfalfa pellets from Azure Standard. When we were in Tehachapi, I toss a bunch onto the compost pile and hose them down. The girls would come eat some of it, but not very much.

The add section on here is very funny. One of the random posts in the Sponsors Showcase popped up with: Best Water tight Hatches ever!" I was both confused and intrigued. When I clicked on the link, it was for Water tight Hatch covers on a Ship!

Because I clicked on the link, does BYC now get a portion of a penny for that? Or do I have to by one of those Hatch covers?

That add must of come from the wrong cloud!

update: Amelia looks worse, she's not interested in treats at all & only stands still with her eyes closed -- and now her feathers look puffy. I'm going to try to rig up a box or something to bring her indoors where its warm -- but am not sure i can mix the save-a-chick vitamins i have with the Corid-water, i've always read not to mix anything else in with Corid?

poor girl! and what timing with this cold snap...

Yes, give her the electorlytes and bring her inside.

Sorry to hear she is not better!

Also, check for mites--look for little specks around the vent that move. Also, check the vent for redness and swelling.

Is she pulling out her feathers? Any other symptoms like watery eyes, nasal discharge or coughing?

Yes! Quail is very Tasty and the eggs are prized by Chefs.

On Iron Chef America, one of the competitors often cooks a Quail egg to put on top of something.

Also, the Coturnix Quails are ready to lay eggs in 6 weeks.

I love that show and any other cooking show for that matter :) I have seen quail meat and eggs on tv. A lady that works next door to my office raises pigeon or "squab" for restaurants.
