Help please!! My 6 week old Silkies were playing outside with the kids when my daughter noticed blood. I found blood on one of their beaks, but then found another who's toenail had been either stubbed or pecked & bleeding pretty bad. The toes next to it bleeding also. Cleansed it, put Veterycin & baking soda on, wrapped it & separated her :( What else should I do? How long should she be separated? Will this mean I have to separate the bloody beaker? I don't know if that's who did it, but def had blood on its beak.

I am so sorry to hear this!

They can break off a toenail and then the others will go after the blood. That is most likely what happened.

You can put the injured one back as soon as the bleeding has stopped and you are fairly certain that there will be not more blood. I would keep it separated for a couple of days to a week depending on healing.

If you had to keep them together then blukote would hide the wound. It is not needed if you separate them. Veterycin is amazing!

Thanks, Ron! Yes, I always keep Verycin on hand; I saved my dog's chewed off tail without the vet! So I should plan on keeping her separated for about a week? I'm watching the Buff that had a bloody beak to see if its acting weird with the others...nothing so far, but you did warn that there were crazy attacks this week! Can I take her dressing off and just keep spraying the Veterycin a few times a day? I don't see any bleeding through the dressing now.

OK, I need to buy an incubator. I have too many chick orders to rely on my broodies, although I have 2 that I'm pretty sure will commit in the next couple of weeks, the orders are getting more and more so if I want to do this right I need to bite the bullet and buy one.

I had a Little Giant with a turner but it needed constant attention to keep the humidity correct and during lockdown it was a nightmare! As soon as the last chick hatched I cleaned it up, put it on Craigslist and within an hour it was gone! Swearing I'd never incubate again....after getting up in the middle of night to check on chicks, fell and broke my knee but went back to bed, woke up in writhing pain but couldn't remember a thing about how it happened I was so tired from babysitting that incubator for a week!!!

So I want a more reliable, less fussy incubator. I want to have maybe a capacity of about 36????

I'd like all and any opinions on this. Like, what's your favorite incubator for about 3 dozen eggs (if that's a size they make) and why? What is your favorite size incubator and how many eggs do you normally set at a time. I don't think I'm interested in staggered hatches so is it better to have 2 sizes of incubators or run a not full one? What size would you recommend?

AND....do you or do you know anyone who has one for sale? I went to the Brinsea site but it looks like they're incubators are all for smaller batches? I'm going to go back and look but wanted to get this question on here.

Thanks ahead of time!
I like my Genesis GQF incubator it fits 42 eggs in the turner...more if you double stack and/or don't use the turner and hand turn. It's just a "foam box", but it does pretty well for me. I don't worry too much about humidity because lower humidity or dry hatching works better for me. I do up the humidity for hatching. I don't like how "fragile" the foam is and how hard it is to clean. I wish they encased the foam in hard or semi hard plastic. That would make it much easier to clean and sturdier (no nicks, dents, cracks in the foam).

It keeps a pretty steady temp in my house, but should not be used outside or in an non heated or cooled shed/room etc. Also the fan can be a bit noisy, but not too bothersome (just don't keep it in your bedroom unless you like "white noise" lol. The auto turner can make "clunking" noises too.

Mine is an slightly older model and doesn't have the built in humidity or thermometer that I think the new ones have.

I have:
old style Genesis 1588
New Style Genesis 1588 with top temperature controls; humidity and temperature readouts on the top
Brinsea Octagon 40 Advance with a humidity pump;

They hold:
42 in turner
42 in turner
48 has an outside turner

I currently have 83 egg incubating in them! and 13 hatched yesterday, so before that I had 99(3 did not hatch) eggs in my incubators....Crazy stuff.

I like both models. The Wisher1000 hatch was the first one in the new Brinsea. It is set it and forget it, including the humidity. I did not have to refill the pump and it kept the humidity at 40 percent easily. I hatched in the older Genesis. None of the chicks had a problem. They all fluffed up nicely and on time!

I have heard a rumor that there is a refurbished Brinsea place somewhere on the Internet. There was no follow-up post but that might be something to look into.

Driving to Palm Desert...Computer plugged into the car for charging! Ipad and iphone nearby....webinar in 30 minutes...what a funny way to travel.

Meanwhile at home my hens will be very angry that they don't get to free range for 5 days! We have a renter that takes care of the birds while we are gone but I don't the idea of them being out without me being there. Big mother hen..

I'm such a ding dong...

I set eggs right after the Stockton show which means they are hatching this monday...and I won't be home... She's handled a hatch before...and really it's up to the chicks to do their job, she just puts them in the brooder after a day or so!!

Hello Cheryl,
I sent you a PM. Since it is my very first PM, I hope I did not make a mistake and reaches you. Have a wonderful trip!

I finished a hatch yesterday. They were part of the Great egg shipping experiment thread. 18 were set, 2 were clears, 2 quit before lockdown(lots of yolk) and 1 quit before pipping.

One day old Marans and Marans OEs:

And a video from last night--They are figuring out what meal worms are!
Hello Ron,
Awwww! Simply too cute & pretty! I did not know little babies could eat meal worms. Now, I will be searching to find some even though I have terrible scolesiphobia. Well, I will have my husband to handle and feed the babies.
Also, thank you for the info. about the abbreviation thread, which makes it possible for me to understand which breed is being referred to.

Omg, cuteness overload! Thanks for posting! Love the video!

I really want to try again for a dark egg layer. I'm wanting either a Welsummer or some type of Marans, nice quality preferred as my 4-H kiddos are going to start showing in fair this summer. Also I'm down to one silkie who definitely needs a friend to cuddle with. Wouldn't you agree? Anyone here with some good options please pm me.

Thanks in advance,
Haileigh
