California - Northern

OMG, I don't even know what to say to make you feel better, I know there are no words. You poor thing......I can't imagine what you're going through.
Well, I got my final results from UC Davis myself today, and it is Infectious Laryngotracheitis. I've begun culling almost my entire flock; I'm keeping eight bantams that live in separate housing and aren't infected, although I"ve ordered the vaccine for them. And then begins an enormous disinfection effort, and at least the summer's worth of letting the yard lay fallow except for my ducks.

I sure hope some of you guys have hatching eggs available in the spring. I'd like to raise the same breeds that I had, Silver Laced and Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, Ameraucanas, and Blue Andalusians.

This breaks my heart.

Alright here's my two cents: (besides the condolences due towards the end of this thread... good luck Jules!)

I am in Northern California! Mendocino County/ Humboldt line, Raised in Sonoma County...
Everything north of the Bay/Golden Gate is Nor Cal, everything south of Frisco (S.F.) to the grapevine, is Central & everything South of that is So. Cal.
So, technically, if you were raised in CA, there is a Central... Whatever Wikipedia & the rest of the country wants to think is fine by me!

Hi Wasabichicki,

You will get not argument from me. I was born and raised in Tehama couny, the Proberta\Gerber area. This is a crazy long state with two big valleys and three (or is it four?) mountain ranges. You could break the state up into five or six distinct climate zones.

Post pictures of your setup, chickens coops and etc. I love to see pictures from the North Coast.

Once when I was in High School, my family drove a little dirt road through the coast range mountains from Corning to Covelo. Crazy trip.

Ron

LOL Ron...
Covelo is about 15 miles down the way from us... any road to or from there makes an interesting trip!

I agree that there could actually be more regions, especially if it's broken down in to climate:
shoot, I got three micro climates on this hill!
It's paradise though... moved out of Sonoma County ("the rat race") to the hills to raise my kids off the grid... been homesteading w/ my husband for the last 5 years
on 25 acres his family's property... so far so good!

I'll snap some pics for ya'll tomorrow...

Hi Bay Area! If anyone is looking for an emu chick I have a line on one a week old. Friends of mine can have it for $75. It has not been DNA sexed but the seller kept the shell with the membrane in it so for $20 you can get it DNA tested right over in Davis at Zoogen.

If he's a boy I'd call him Gulliver! It's a sweet looking baby and he seems to be sturdy with good legs. If anyone is interested please let me know so I can tell my friend to take the listing off Craigslist.

We took the trip in the late 1970s when I was in High School. I don't know if that road is open any more. There were six in my family, so of course we took a 59 chevy pickup, a Volkswagen fast back and a Toyota Celica on the trip, like a big caravan. At one point, we came around a corner an ran into a herd of Black Angus Steers. Quite a fun trip, especially when the rear drive axle broke on the Volkswagen and we drove the Santa Rosa to get the part.

Quickly look up ivermectin and Dog Frontline. You can also shake and bake with a bag of poultry dust. You will have to do it all over again after two weeks. You also need to clean and treat the coops. It's best to use real poison for this. After the two treatments, you can use DE.

Lots of us are dealing with Mites and Lice. You don't always see the mites. I have posted a link here recently to using Die mite strips. I bought them from Murray McMurray.

Bye,

Ron

but if I was going to take a person stab in the dark I'd say south of Monterey is Southern CA.
I currently live in Yuba City, just 40 miles North of Sacramento. When I went to the defense language institute in Monterey, the US Army considered it Northern California, so I would have to agree with you, Nifty.
Since the US Government calls South of Monterey Southern California, I am inclined to agree. If you look at the politics and voting statewide, it would seem that South of Monterey is vastly different world than Northern Cal.

Hi Kim,

I am happy to see you back!

I was worried something had happened to you.

Maybe you were on vacation?

Oh yea, too many animals at your place.

Ron
I'm so sorry Jules! How awful. I wish there was another solution for you, other than culling all of them.
