Yeah, I'm dreaming of a vacation.

I got really sick for a few days. Weird because I never get sick, maybe once a year, but this was bad. So now I'm trying to catch up on my chores.
Your front yard chickens sure are pretty!

Hey folks,
I have some cockerels from great bloodlines that I need to rehome. (no roos allowed). If anyone would like any;
1. icelandics (The Sheriff)
2. wheatan Marans (Ray, HorseShoe on BYC)
3. brabanters (1 roo, David Sapp, ME)
4. Blue isbars (The Sheriff)
5. Blue Marans

I am in Oakland and around all weekend. Pickup only. All have been hatched here, and vaccinated for Mareks. My flock is closed.

Let me know! Have a great holiday weeked - Allison

I heard there was a bad cold\Flu going around here.

I love the Basque chickens. Rooster 3 is the friendliest guy yet. They also grow very quickly. At six weeks old, they are much bigger than the 8 week old Marans. I need to sell the Marans. No one on CA chickens or this thread seems to want the Marans...I hatched them from Linda Hammids flock and she has very nice chickens with very dark eggs.

Ok, I will sneak some time and reply more about the lice and stuff. I am following the health care instructions from Linda Hamid. I think I have posted her website before:

http://www.sweeth2o.us/health.html

I haven't started the fowl pox injections, but will this fall. It is getting close to the start of summer, so I will be worming with ivermectin then-seasonally. I put it in the water for two days and then 10 to 14 days later I will repeat. This kills most worms, lice and mites. I also clean the coop at least twice a month and have been treating with an organic spray that is supposed to disrupt the mites. I also put DE on the roosts and into the nest boxes. I posted a picture of the coop last Saturday with pictures of the Die Mite strips. I will change them every six months, so in October I will replace them.

I have poultry dust and do treat the new ones with it during the quarantine period. I also switch shows for slippers when I go out into the yard with the chickens. I also feed and water the young ones first to not expose them to the older ones until their immune systems are more mature.

It seems to work

85 is too hot for 2 1/2 week old chicks.  70-75 would be much better.

Are they lethargic?  Standing there with their wings out?  Panting?  If yes, they are too hot.

Hi Happy Chooks,

Everyone I've talked to has said the lowest should be 80 right now. Should Barnevelder chicks have a different heat level?? From what I understand next week should be 75 and the following week should be 70. I could be wrong. None of the chicks are breathing with their beaks open or have their wings out. I think their activity level is normal although this is my first time and don't really know what normal is.. They walk around and eat and drink. When I turn off the heat lamp I'll go out there a little later and they're huddled in the corner. I really hope it isnt something I'm doing that's causing this! I sent the last one that passed away into UC Davis and am waiting on the results. I'll keep the thread updated :)

How much are you selling your Marans for? I'll try to convince Johnny to add two more to our flock! And we could pick them up at the same time as the Basque's... That's convincing right?! Haha By the way, what color are the two Basque pullets you were talking about? I'm doing my research on the breed. What amazing birds!

Hi Meg,

It's great to hear the other two are still hanging on!

It's time for the Pullets to have pictures. I will work on the pictures tomorrow. I forgot to ask if you wanted cockerels. I assumed you could not have them, but thought I would ask to make sure. I will be keeping 1, so that leaves me with 4 that need a new home.

The Marans are 8 weeks old and don't need a brooder. They have been outside for several weeks now. I took the heater out two weeks ago. I will sell two pullets for 25.00 for the pair. I have three of them. The cockerels I will sell for $10.00 each. With one cockerel and two pullets you would have a breeding trio.

The chicks are doing good! I was scared to post anything just in case I jinxed it. If we get through this weekend and both of them are still with us I will be so relieved! I have 3 more Barnevelder chicks on hold waiting for me to figure this stuff out with my little guys. I'm pulling for them that's for sure!

I can't wait to see the pictures of the pullets! Yes I would love to try out my egg hatching skills one day! If you have a Basque cockerel that seems like a sweet one I would love to have him! Would you accept a trade for the cockerel? If my rooster Barnevelder survives the weekend I would like to find him a new home. You could have one of my female Barnevelders as well to have a pair. Does that interest you at all?

I'm going to pass on the Marans for now. At my count I have 4 Barnevelder pullets, 1 Barnevelder cockerel (2 chicks with me and 3 on hold), 2 Marraduna Basque pullets and hopefully 1 Marraduna Basque cockerel from you! Wow I'm so stoked at the little family we're creating!

YAY FOR THE LONG WEEKEND!!
