I hope you are doing better now. I had a very sore throat, in addition to all that, so think it was the flu. The worst lasted about 4 days and I still have lingering respiratory issues.

Reading about all the special care you all do for your chickens, I'm amazed any of mine are still alive.

I use a heat lamp with my brooder chicks but never have been able to regulate the heat like recommended. I do watch the chicks' behavior to try to tell if they're comfortable. I move the lamp a little farther away each week, then start leaving it off for longer & longer periods.

I don't like to medicate or use poison unless absolutely necessary. I haven't seen any parasites, so haven't treated for them. I did put out a DE dust bath before taking a couple to a show. The one time I had a fecal test done with the chickens, there weren't any parasites, even though I had never wormed them. I do need to have another done.

I used to routinely worm all my livestock with Ivermectin. Since I started testing, I've found that I was over medicating. I think the multi species rotational grazing management system that I do is preventing a parasite load in all the critters. That's my theory anyway. I might just be lucky that I haven't killed all my chickens from neglect.

Enjoy your weekend!

I have a sore throat also. I think I have the flu or I'd be showing improvement by now. I can barely talk (pleases my husband to no end!). My nephews graduation party is tomorrow so I'm hoping I'll be good enough to go. I won't go if I have a fever, don't want to pass this to anyone. I'm with you on treating my chickens if I see stuff, no routine vaccines/worming/dusting and knock on wood, I've never had a problem. I have dusted when I saw some mites but only the ones that look suspicious with feather loss. Years ago I decided that it's like not letting your kids run barefoot. They don't have a chance to build up immunities. Glad you're feeling better, the last time I had the flu I had lingering respitory problems for about 6 weeks after.

My Barnevelder chicks are three weeks old today! Although 3 of my 5 died all in a row, these two guys seem to be hanging in there.

I think this little one is a boy:

This one, I think, is my one remaining girl:

Here are my two dogs, Wilson and Gia, meeting the chicks for the first time. Look suspicious?! We will definitely be keeping an eye on those two!:

Is anyone interested in providing a home for one of these young cockerels? (We've got 3) They are very healthy (and of course, happy "California" chickens)! They've been hand raised by my son and me, but they need to go before they begin crowing.

They are just over 2 months old. They were from bluish-green eggs that my broody wouldn't stay on so I incubated them (pictured below). I want to keep the 2 that look like pullets, but the 3 black ones with bigger, redder combs must go. They have gorgeous black feathering (with rainbow iridescent colors in the sun), slate grey legs and puffy cheek tufts. I've got them listed on CraigsList for "make me an offer".

This is my BO trying out the "broody" thing with the eggs (I ended up putting them in my bator) This hen (Buffy) actually DID go broody a few weeks later and hatched out 2 Fertile Trader Joe eggs! I love my chickens!

EE's are supposed to be hard to tell the gender with. They can get saddle and hackle feathers on both pullets and cockerels.

I wonder what these are. Do you think someone is trying to breed Olive Eggers? You should post pictures to the EE Braggers Forum (They like to see the face with the comb and wattles along with a side shot with the feet) to let the experts there help you figure out gender.

My guess is not worth much, but if that is a cross with a French Black Copper Maran, at 8 weeks the cockerels should have red or copper color coming out on the wings.

Oh, just to let you know, it takes them quite a bit of time to get that crowing going. They sound so funny when they start

and they are not very loud.

You can safely wait until they crow and still have several weeks to find them a home.

Nice looking EE's or OEGs.

Morning Nor Cal...
I am sure I have posted here before but I sure do miss the west coast at times!!
I lived in Redding for a few years after coming back from Australia as a teenager. I went to Shasta High School and then joined the navy.
I have a Cousin who lives in Redding, another who lives in Greenville during the summer and in Sacramento the rest of the year, and another cousin in Oroville.
We used to go to Oroville quite often and Greenville off and on during the year.
I miss the mountains... but not the heat. I am in Wisconsin now!!

Hey! I used to live in Covelo. Mind you I lived in a lot of small towns in the Sierra Nevadas. And you 2 are right THAT is one crazy road. We are in SJ now, and ill argue we are Northern Cailfornia!
