Ah Molly, what beautiful babies. I used to raise the LaMancha (many years ago) and the others Nubian? Very cute.

We've had about 12 lambs born so far this year, another set of twins yesterday. It has been the year of the boys though for sure, only one girl so far! I hope this doesn't hold over to my poultry, it was pretty boy heavy last year.

Congratulations on your hatch, I love chipmunk chicks.

Deb

Our chicks arrived today! I was having a dream that a postal hub called me and told me that the box was silent, all the chicks were dead, and asking if they should just send it back when my phone rang in real life. It was the post office! I was so nervous driving there and back, but when I opened the lid they were all alive! One has a toe bent inward and it keeps falling down, but he's still racing around with the others and was one of the first to drink. Can anyone point me towards a thread about correcting their toes? (ETA I found some. I am wondering when you should try and correct it and when to just leave it alone. I'll get some pictures of him and get all your expert opinions)

Pictures later! We've got some little fuzzy footed ones. So exciting

Congratulation.. Very exciting News. Glad to here they made it to you safe! .

Omg what a treat to wake up to beautiful baby pics! Ty all. My friend with the brinsea cabinet hatched the eggs from the Stockton show this weekend. Still waiting on a few silkies and a Barnie and a jubilee orph but other then that and one blood ring that quit everything hatched.

So I should have some pictures soon.

It looks like bringing the megabator inside has fixed its quirks. It does fluctuate a bit by a degree or so but corrects fast enough it wont affect the eggs. The humidity still wants to run around 25% so we are sticking a clay pot in the water to give a little more without going overboard. I think I might go back to hatching in the smaller bators rather then try and get 2 humidity zones. At least in winter while the heater is running in the house.

For those of you thinking about bresse warning they eat!!! They are hitting a growth cycle and eating more then the marans, the ultimate piggies. They have made a noticible dent in my feed bill.

Also for you breeders I'm having an issue with my silkie fertility. I have 3 roos in there so that isn't the issue. I think its a fluffieness issue. Should I be trimming the girls or the boys? And how much? I can Google it but thought I would ask here first. Poor scalpie was sitting on quite a few duds. I was not sure who were duds and who was new so I just put all of those in the megabator but I know they can't all be fresh.

Now to show mario pictures of the goats so pretty miss molly!

Congrats to all of you with new chicks! Love the baby goats, also, especially the Nubian looking ones. Triplets are really a wonderful surprise!

I have an enclosed 16 x 20 building that I use as a farrowing barn. I cleaned it out, yesterday, after moving the pigs outdoors. It occurred to me that it might make a good space to brood chicks, until they get big enough to range outside.

There is already a heat lamp in there. I could add more. The floor is concrete. I was wondering if I could use that aluminum insulation, that someone mentioned on here, to enclose a small area? Put shavings right on top of the concrete. Would that be too cold for chicks? The sow would push all the straw aside to lay on the bare concrete, while her piglets huddled in the pile of straw under the light. I think she did this because the concrete was cold.

I could also move the large metal stock tank in there, as a brooder. What is the best base material for a brooder, under shavings? What should be avoided? Newspaper is too slippery, correct?

I've brooded chicks many times, but always started out in plastic tubs with paper towels. I'm trying to think larger scale now, something easy to clean.

I'm looking at this big empty space and considering options. Any ideas?

I read something written by a master breeder. He said that the fluff should be pulled, not trimmed. (YIKES!) He was talking about feathered fowl, not Silkies. Just passing that info on.
