Quote: A couple of year ago one hit Williams. That one was caught on home video and was impressive for a small tornado. It did some roof damage to a house. They are not common but have been here for ever. My Dad remembered them from growing up in the 9140s.

I was driving up I-5 once, down by Coalinga and Lemoore, when the radio started beeping the emergency broadcast that there was a tornado warning. That was the first and only time I've heard a real emergency broadcast and it scared the crap out of me. The weather ended up so bad that I couldn't see the vehicles that I knew were in front and behind me. Pulled off the freeway to wait it out.

A friend who lived in Lemoore ended up losing his fence because of it. Luckily it was not a big one.
I know how scary the emergency broadcasts can be, especially in a car! Coming back from a Giants game one evening watching a nasty looking front coming closer and knowing DD was pretty much in the middle of it, it was raining so hard couldn't see to drive, then the hail started and we were wondering if the windshield was going to go. We were nervous wrecks by the time we got to Oak Run.

I'm a lighting freak so I was enjoying the view when that broadcast was issued. Pulled over and enjoyed the show, could have done without the high winds rocking the car.

Quote: Getting Heritage chicks will be straight run so unless they are auto sexing, half of them will usually be boys. With BAs and RIRs you can usually tell gender by 6 weeks.

Often the little roos are so friendly that they get snatched up first too.

Hi other California Chicken-lovers,

I've been a member of BYC for almost a year, but don't post much (hardly at all). But, since I'm rather excited about my soon to arrive baby chicks, I thought I'd post here, and maybe in the Rare Breed area. I will have 10 Golden Lakenvelder pullets, 10 Silver Campine pullets (& two cockerels) along with 5 Barred rocks very soon

Unfortunately, my original flock - I RIR, 1 White Star, 1 Buff Orpington, and 2 Barred Rocks fell victim to nasty possums

The chicken enclosure has been hardened, lighting improved, and other defensive mechanisms investigated.

Welcome to the N CA thread, you have jumped into my breeds! I raise exhibition silver lakenvelder, gold & silver campine and both LF & bantam barred rocks.....................along with about 25 other breeds

And just this morning a BIG nasty possum fell victim to a 22...........

Good luck with your new chicks, you have chosen lovely breeds (IMO)!

Hi! I'm new to BYC! I'm in the city limits in Woodland but I'm already having problems with "chicken math". LOL. I only have two partridge rocks right now but as soon as they go broody I'd like to give them each some chicks to raise. Maybe three each. Oops. That's double as many chickens as I'm allowed to have.

Welcome to BYC and the thread!

Welcome Alli & WaterKat.

It might be very dangerous to my health to ever meet Deb, some very cool breeds you have. I do think hubby would notice if they showed up in one of our flocks.

Nice to have another Woodlander on here. I live about 30 miles north of you.

WaterKat, welcome to the group!

Ron, do you have any room in your Easter Hatch? When is the start date for those? I have my favorite hen up here by the house. She was with Brutus until 2/10, and I didn't want any of his chicks, so I didn't give you any of her eggs. She's been without a rooster since the 10th. If I put another rooster with her now, I was hoping to have her eggs fertilized by the other rooster. She only lays an egg every other day. She's one of my pullets that you hatched for me last year. Maybe that wouldn't be a good idea because it would be just a few chicks to brood by themselves? What do you think?

HI Kim,

The Easter hatch set is on March 9th, so that would probably work out fine. I will have room for them.

It is fine to brood small numbers. One is bad though.

So, since I separated Brutus on 2/10, do you think she will be clear of him after 3 weeks? I don't believe the new research and have always waited a month, but that wouldn't give me enough time for the Easter hatch. If I put the new rooster with her now, when could I collect eggs that would be 100% sure to be from him?
