Do you have a surprise roo?

I have a couple that squawk a lot in the morning. They stop when I give them their greens. This morning they got chopped Bok Choy stocks and a couple of bunches of Spinach.

Sometimes they start making more noise when they reach POL(point of Lay). My Black Australorps do not make noise. The noisiest ones seem to be the Dorking Crosses. I named my SG Dorking Screaming Mimi - now just Mimi. She is almost a year old and is much quieter now.

Luckily they won't make enough noise to get you in trouble in Woodland--Crowing does though. Can you post a picture of the one that may be crowing?

She's definitely a hen. Laying almost an egg a day for months now. I'll try to get a picture of her doing it.

My Wellie has not laid since we moved last winter, as far as I know. (She is notorious for hiding her eggs) She started squatting again about 10 days ago, and guess what we found a week later?

All 4 so far have been long like that, but they are more round and getting darker, again. Love my wellie's eggs!
Congrats on the eggs!

I have a Barred Rock or an Australorp that lays an egg like that(shape not color). It is hard to close the egg carton, so I often put ones like that into the deli bin and use them first. Do you think Mareks causes that? Probably just something in the vent I suppose.

Quote: I would distract her. I have seen a treat ball for them--you open it and put a cabbage inside of it. They then have to peck it to get the goodie. You could also get one of those flock blocks that they peck. You could put it out at night and then remove it after 7 or so I the morning. That way you can avoid the decibel levels. Actually in Woodland, I think it is 10 pm to 6 am. It's just nice to keep them quiet until 7 or so in the morning.

Also, give the neighbors an half dozen or so of eggs every once in a while. Bribes never hurt!

Have any of you had a chicken with vent gleet? I think that's what one of my OE hens has. From what I can find on BYC, flushing with either epson salts or molasses is recommended. I have both and was wondering which would be the better choice. Any opinions?

They are very sweet!
How sweet is that! Makes you feel so lucky when you get a hatch like that!

Haha!
I have been finding eggs everywhere. My new Stockton showgirl just started to lay I'm so excited! She sat in the dog crate all morning . Of course that is not the expected place either.....
Me too! I sure wish I knew what happens to make them start finding a new nest! Seems like no sooner do they all get settled laying in the coop, in the boxes and something happens and off they go, spreading eggs all over the place.

This has to be the oddest place so far.......this wicker chair is laying on it's side on the front end of one of our fishing boats. We laid it up there to protect it from the winter weather. One of the Marans and my Rhode Island Red lay in the whole where the arm is. Luckily there is an electrical cord coiled up underneath so the eggs don't roll off the boat.

Notice the little fuzzy butt showing through the hole in the arm of the chair.

I'm collecting from 4 different spots right now and still searching for another because the other Marans and one of my EE's that lays a beautiful, almost olive green egg doesn't have eggs in any of those spots. My Brinsea 20 will be here Wednesday and I want to set eggs Saturday so I need to find it now!

Now that is funny! Chickens are weird!

It is a yeast infection or thrush. Did they eat moldy feed?

ACV in the water, flush with molasses and then give them plain yogurt and/or a probiotic. If it is real bad, you can put athletes foot medicine on the vent.

They also said copper sulfate if you suspect a fungal infection internally from moldy feed.

I hope she gets better.

Hello guys! I was wondering how old for silkie/sizzles/frizzles to go outside? I have a crate to put them in for bedtime and then lock them in the run during the day to protect them from the rest of the flock- so they can see and be seen by the flock...but it is cold at night still. So I'm a little unsure. They are on my porch under a red heat lamp still. Oh and they are 8 weeks old today. :D
