California - Northern

I am, I have ten birds entered. It just seemed wiser to go to a one day show 1.5 hrs from my house, instead of the overnight trip 5 hrs from my house in Bakersfield.

Are you going to be there?

I'm probably going to go, Seramas sure are cute! And it's close to me too.

Great! Love to meet you too! How are your chicks doing?

I'll have to wear a name tag so we can find each other lol. Chicks are doing great, mama is in full mama mode, she's getting pretty irritable being away from the other chickens but the chicks are so small I'm afraid of putting her in with the flock. And part of my run is chicken wire

so they can get out.

Yes, with my 11 yr old and maybe more of the family too. Our drive is probably closer to 3 hrs, but it's a great learning opportunity. I'd love to meet up with you and have a chance to pick your brain about Seramas, if you aren't too busy. If there are any good prospects for sale, we are looking to buy a few, but really have to limit the roosters. I suppose it's best to get there early (unfortunately, we're not the best morning people here

). Do you know what time it starts?

People could coop in on Friday 3-7, and Saturday 8:30-9:30. Judging is supposed to start at 10am and run through 3pm with an hour lunch break at noon. I'll pm my cell phone number to you.

I look forward to meeting you too.

The one time I let a serama hen hatch 3 chicks in the run, it was a big mistake for me. She kept them in the nest box for a couple of days and then ventured outside. I checked on them several times and everything looked fine. About an hour later I checked and she only had two. Then I saw the "game" in the pen next door. They were playing keep away with the poor lifeless body of the chick. Now my policy is a broody only gets to raise chicks if she has a totally seperate pen to keep them in until they are older.

That's kinda what I figured, especially since Seramas are so small even as adults. She's a fierce mama but there's only so much she could do to protect them.

Quote: Nope, it's The Venetian. Gorgeous, large rooms and a bed that was as comfortable as mine at home. This is the mall that connects to The Venetian. You can take a Gondola ride on the river. The ceiling is painted blue with clouds. It took us 2 days to get through the whole mall. I've never walked so much in my life - came home with blisters on both feet.

My daughter Clementine tending the big girls as they scratched around the garden on this sunny Sunday. Mark is at the store picking up lumber to start the coop!! So exciting! You all have seriously given me the hatching fever. I am really wanting to get an incubator and set some eggs. I think I'll start with some grocery store eggs to try and get things down pat and then I keep adding to the list of breeds I want from PapaBrooder! Can't wait.

What do you think is the best, most cost effective incubator? I want one that works well, but $400+ is much more than I want to spend. I'm generally pretty adept at learning new things, but I'm wondering what a good compromise between affordability and function is.

I just ordered a 1588 Hovabator from G.Q.F. Mfg. They had a kit which included the turners and 30 bob white quail eggs for $197 free shipping. I am not certain if the Incubator Warehouse has free shipping, but they seem to be pretty close price wise. I asked for Coturnix quail eggs instead and we will see if they send them. There is a two week back log with them however. I don't NEED quail eggs, but I have been researching quail, so what the heck right?

I am somewhat relieved to hear people say this is an okay incubator. Everyone talks about the Brinsea ones so much I was starting to get a little worried these weren't very good.
