Deerling your daughter is so pretty. Love her name! Did you settle on a bator yet?
Thank you! She's wonderful

I am going to take everyone's recommendations and get the Hovobator 1588 with an automatic turner. Probably will have to wait until we've bought everything for the coop, though. Especially considering we'll probably have to build another coop if we hatch any eggs, haha.

Thank you, Ron. I've been experimenting with trays of fodder. My DH fed them one while I was in Denver with my sister. I'm suspecting that it had some mold on it and if he didn't have his glasses on, he wouldn't have seen it. I noticed my OE just sitting under a bush yesterday with her eyes closed. She did not come out and mob me for treats like the rest of the flock did. She lays a dark Marans colored egg and hasn't layed since I got home. She doesn't have any sign of respiratory illness, no eye problems, etc. I put her in a kennel overnight and examined her all over this morning. Some white/light yellow stuff squirted out of her vent all down the front of me and onto my shoe. It did smell bad but not terrible. I fed her some nutri-drench in water by eye dropper this morning because she hasn't touched her water or food. She drank it from the dropper so that's good. Off to give her the molasses flush and then give her plain yogurt...

Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Out of curiosity, has anyone in the Sacramento area seen the ad on craigslist for a chicken auction on March 10th and happen to know anything about it?

Does anyone have doves or pigeons? Eric gave into DD, at least they don't crow. She's looking for a pair she can use for 4-H so diamond doves won't work-they will probably find their way in anyway, or maybe button quail to clean up the floor.

We started building the coop yesterday! Got the site level and the floor framing done. We're building it up off the ground so we can put a trailer under it when we move (which is not in the near future, but we're renting). It's so exciting! Would be more exciting if I didn't already need a second... This one will only hold about 20 chickens

Its neverending! Keep an eye out on CL for an incubator, too, you will see them there from time to time. And look on the stuff section of BYC too they pop up there.
Help! One of my girls is making a lot of noise. Almost crowing! How do I stop it?
Is it all day or when she ( OK when anyone) lays an egg? I have a rooster that does not know the difference between " I'm laying" and "I'm dying " that sets everyone off whenever a girl lays. If you head chicken is doing the same thing it can get loud. Like Ron said distractions work well. I go out and say what are you doing and they all get embarrassed and shut up. I cant figure out who it is that's setting them off, however!
Have any of you had a chicken with vent gleet? I think that's what one of my OE hens has. From what I can find on BYC, flushing with either epson salts or molasses is recommended. I have both and was wondering which would be the better choice. Any opinions?
There is a thread on BYC that recommended nu stock on vent gleet. it was about a women who was away for 2 years and readopted her own chickens that had been mistreated and all she went through getting them back. they ALL had vent gleet and she used that. But she loved that stuff and used it a lot, I got some after reading the thread, but have only used it once.
I'll have to wear a name tag so we can find each other lol. Chicks are doing great, mama is in full mama mode, she's getting pretty irritable being away from the other chickens but the chicks are so small I'm afraid of putting her in with the flock. And part of my run is chicken wire

so they can get out.
Hens don't see other chicks as chickens until they are bigger, don't put her out ( saw deb said the same thing)
Does anyone know a place to get a female duck in the Santa Cruz area or surrounding areas? . A friend lost her Duck yesterday and the male duck is really sad.
I'm so sorry :(. Ducks get so heartbroken, I still get tears in my eyes when I remember poor Luke running on the ground calling to the ducks flying in the sky to come down to him. If she is not attached to eggs 2 boys can get along well too. You DO see ducks show up in Animal shelters. There will be a metric ton of babies after Easter :(.

I got TWO turkey eggs today. Stuffing has decided to nest in my daffodils ( OK they are not daffodils they are the ones that look like daffodils but are tiny, dunno what they are called) next to where I park. I'm trying to decide if I can put a structure up around her if she goes broody, because she is looking like she is hoping to do so. Sitting for everyone and cooing and letting me pick her up and pet her, not her normal piss and vinegar self. It is not close to the street, but not enclosed. There is a picture in the turkey section of someone putting an old cloths washer around her turkey and closing it to keep her safe at night but I don't know how the neighbor above us would feel about looking at a washer for a month....
Pumpkins is scaring my broody off her nest of gold balls when she is laying. I was going to give her some of the chicks I have now to grow out but have to figure out who is who first! We will be taking pictures tonight, Deanna I need you!!
Now if only the quail would kick in, I got 3 eggs then nothing, and have about 12 people on my waiting list. darn things.

ALSO, HUUUGE difference between bobwhites and coturnix's. Might be worth waiting 2 weeks for cot eggs if you have not already gotten them. I wish they didn't call 4 sets of birds that are not in any way similar to each other quail, its confusing!
