Mary! Good to hear from you! I've post stalked the emu board a few times and had read that you had your girls now. I still have KnockKnock, she's quite the character. The breeding pair are laying their second batch of eggs this season. I'm not incubating any though... I have about 16 to blow out.

Sorry to hear about your turkeys. I was sitting in one of the turkey coops this evening with my older, very tame Bourbon hen. I'm afraid she's not going to be around much longer. Sad because she's so tame.

Not much new here. The incubating/hatching bug hit me last week so I fired up one of the incubators. Just a mixed bag of chicken eggs. I'm collecting turkey eggs to set next. Oy!

We wander up to Auburn/Colfax fairly often as DH's cousin is there. Would love to catch up with you sometime. Hope all's well!

Deanna Your duck friend have any luck or are we going to have to do a train from zoo to santa cruze?
Regarding Duck, I just left her a message but have not heard back yet. I hope she found one as it sounds like her little male duck is a mess without his hatchmate. Oddly, the duck she lost laid an egg the day she died. She may try to hatch that egg, but needs a companion before then. A Zoo train... LOL

Hi Liz!

They will do this when the first start laying or when they start back up.

Give them free choice calcium and they should get back to normal soon. If they keep laying them like that for a week or two, check into parasites.

Best!

I have a stubborn jersey giant who hasn't started laying yet maybe it's her? Thanks Ron

Super creepy. We used to have people open our gate and come up our driveway. Then my DH put this sign at the gate, and WALAH - no more unwanted visitors. He put it up as a joke, but it really does work!

Gorgeous eggs! Love the blues especially!
Not familiar with Bantams or the SOP for Plymouth Rocks, but there are people that can help you in the Heritage LF thread in the Breeding/Showing section. I've been learning a TON there. I know they aren't LF chickens, but there are at least 2 APA judges in that thread - Walt and Bob.
I once saw a sign that said "Shot and Buried" now that would get someones attention.

Hello guys! I was wondering how old for silkie/sizzles/frizzles to go outside? I have a crate to put them in for bedtime and then lock them in the run during the day to protect them from the rest of the flock- so they can see and be seen by the flock...but it is cold at night still. So I'm a little unsure. They are on my porch under a red heat lamp still. Oh and they are 8 weeks old today. :D

I would wait a few more weeks, then let them out when you are around. My silkies aren't so smart, and their feathers make it harder for them to see. My girls tend to walk into things, and got picked on by the others for quiet a while.

Geese mate for life. I can't remember if I've shared this story but we had two geese, Hank & Heather. We had them a long time, before kids, with kids....goslings....geese morn so don't ever take all their babies or you'll hear the saddest cry you've ever heard (even our neighbors wanted to know what was wrong with the geese)....anyway, one day we found Hank dead in the nesting box. Heather missed Hank so much. She had ducks and chickens and us to hang with but you could tell she missed Hank so when I heard there was a goose that was also lonely we brought him home. Heather was happy to have someone to hang with but she was loyal to Hank and was never more then friends with her new friend and he respected that. I was out of town on business for a week and when I returned I went right out to my little self made pond, cleaned it out, refilled it with fresh water and while Heather took her bath I went and got a glass of wine and settled into my chair to watch her and relax. When she was done she came over and sat at my feet for a nap. My husband came down to the pond and looked at Heather, then at me, then at Heather and said "I think your girl is dead" I told him she was just napping, she just took a bath and laid down in front of me.....and ummm, omg.....died! I think she died of a broken heart and she wanted to thank me for the company but she just missed Hank so much, so she waited for me to return from my trip, took her bath in the fresh water to show me she was OK and then died at my feet. Those two geese taught us so much and were a constant entertainment. Yes, they can die from a broken heart.

Well the two week back order with GQF was apparently old news...... They shipped the 1588 incubator today and I only ordered it Friday after closing time. I had actually planned for the two week delay, because I am going to Disneyland tomorrow!!! I don't like getting packages delivered when I am away from home, or if I have to sign for them! Plus it is coming with some sort of quail eggs!

That just goes to show no matter how much I plan I can't control everything!

I persist in trying though......
Of course if you had been ready and waiting it would still be backordered! Can you arrange from someone to sign for it? My Brinsea is coming tomorrow and they won't leave it without a signature so my mom is going to be here to sign for it. Usually you can choose to waive the signature but Brinsea won't deliver without it, they must have had problems in the past.

Can someone store the eggs for you or is that too long for quail eggs? Well, at least you have something to look forward to when you return from Disneyland! Maybe hard boil those cute little eggs for a gourmet treat.
