I've got a second pip, wrong way chick. Is there anything I need to watch for with this upsidedown egg? The pip is below the widest portion of the egg, looks like it will be trying to zip against the egg carton it is sitting in. Right now it has good air access, seeing movement of the broken membrane and it is peeping.

Quote: Yes, it is in a Mal position. There are several types of mal position and all of them are bad for the chick. Up side down chicks are often that way because there is something wrong with them. It is almost always impossible for one to hatch because the chick is scrunched up with the big end of the chick in the small end. They cannot turn to zip the shell open.

Lucky that the pip missed a vein. In 24 hours when you help it out, be very careful of the veins. Make sure to open up the area around the beak and make sure no liquid gets in. And of course if you can without hurting the other chicks(you always want to make sure you do not help this one and sacrifice others hatching--Odds are 50% that this one is a goner anyway), turn the chick to the head up position.

Happy hatching! 13 Bresse to lockdown today.

One of the things I do for the English Department is purchase equipment, so I am on the email list for the Bargain Barn, the place that sells and salvages old equipment here. I just got an email that said old pole vaulting matts were available...The first thing that crossed my mind was if I could use them for the chicken run! Maybe a nest box bottom to keep the eggs from cracking?

This chicken obsession thing does weird things to your mind!

I would wait a few more weeks, then let them out when you are around. My silkies aren't so smart, and their feathers make it harder for them to see. My girls tend to walk into things, and got picked on by the others for quiet a while.

I wouldn't be letting them free range. They would be locked in the run. My chickens don't use the run- they all free range so only the silkies would be in it.

Thank you BigDaddysMom and Ron,

I assisted 1 from my first hatch, but my thinking was to do nothing for 24 hours. I'm checking the pips progress against the carton, if it goes to the right, (clockwise), it will be much easier going.

Mariah and I worked out our teamwork with the first assist, now that she knows what we're trying to do it should go even better.

Hurray, #3 knows which end is up!

That's a good idea! I was actually thinking we could just drag a log across, haha. A chain is probably a better solution. I'm not sure if the gate will really ever happen, our landlord is pretty, ummm, hands off. There is a small Private Property sign but I am thinking about getting or making a bigger "Private Property ,Absolutely No Trespassing" or something sign. I always saw those and thought they were so unfriendly, but I totally get it now. The person who drove up today was in a huge black Escalade with darkly tinted windows and my six year old was outside with the chicks by herself. It just makes me nervous. OR it just gives me another reason to get Guineas and an attack Llama.

And a shotgun! We live someplace where people don't show up in your driveway, so when they do, the shotgun is just inside the door. I am usually at the front door before they are out of their car, and I just tell people that this is not the kinda place you want to just show up at people's houses when you are not expected. Most people sit right back down and drive way. If they take the second leg out of the car, the shotgun is in my hand where they can see it. Have not had anyone stay after that!

What could be the reason folks would show up randomly at someone's house? I figure they might be lost? Very strange for folks to just walk up to someone's house these days unless they need help or have ill intentions...

Years ago we hired someone to take down a tree for us, the next year he just open our gate and walked in. e were busy working doing other yard work and completely surprised us, 85 lb. charging ANTI-golden ret. really surprised him!

Our old firewood guy used to do the same thing, we hadn't called to order wood and all of a sudden he's in the driveway.

Our house is on a dead-end road, only five lots - if I see a car that I don't recognize they are lost. I'm fortunate that our area is so quiet that I can hear them coming at least a mile away, usually two.
