What could be the reason folks would show up randomly at someone's house? I figure they might be lost? Very strange for folks to just walk up to someone's house these days unless they need help or have ill intentions...
In Woodland we get door to door salesmen. One time I told a guy that I was not interested. He was miffed and said he had not gotten to give me his sales pitch! I told him that he did not have a right to force me to listen to him on my private property. You should have heard him cuss as he walked away. Nearly as bad as the teen agers showing up wanting me to buy candy from them to keep them away from a life of crime.....

I wouldn't be letting them free range. They would be locked in the run. My chickens don't use the run- they all free range so only the silkies would be in it.

Zoo, I had no problems letting my little ones out free-ranging with the LF once they had seen each other protected for a week or so. The only time they try to pick on them is if there is food involved. Now, my attempt on integrating them into to the same coop was a total failure. I had to give up. My poor silkie pullet was found by my husband "playing dead" with her face in the dirt completely still for more than 10 minutes. This is after they have totally been free-ranging together for months! I have moved her back into the "grow-up" coop with my 3 month olds who are completely overtaking her in size now, but do not bother her one bit. I hope you have better luck when it comes time to move them into their new digs!

Man, I lived in a house in Woodland for about 9 months. When I was there I got more people showing up at my door either trying to sell me stuff or convert me then anywhere else I've ever lived.

That's a good idea! I was actually thinking we could just drag a log across, haha. A chain is probably a better solution. I'm not sure if the gate will really ever happen, our landlord is pretty, ummm, hands off. There is a small Private Property sign but I am thinking about getting or making a bigger "Private Property ,Absolutely No Trespassing" or something sign. I always saw those and thought they were so unfriendly, but I totally get it now. The person who drove up today was in a huge black Escalade with darkly tinted windows and my six year old was outside with the chicks by herself. It just makes me nervous. OR it just gives me another reason to get Guineas and an attack Llama.

Get a pair of attack llamas

I used to live above the lighthouse at Point Reyes; $63 was subtracted from rent each month due to "lack of privacy". What it really should have said was, "people will completely disregard the residence sign and try to walk into your house frequently." If the door was locked they would just wander around the back and front yards, of course going directly by the large "residence area" sign and over a small fence. It was really annoying, my neighbor had kids. Having people in the yard with kids would be way more freaky!

I love the goose story threadgeek. You tell it so well. Also love the baby pics and the thought of waking up to a bator full of chicks. I am setting eggs aroung 4/3 to time the hatch more or less with the arrival of my chicks from Ideal, Partridge Rocks and Privett, Speckled Sussex, CA Grey, Easter Egger, Black Star and Delawares. I hope I don't screw it up it will have a variety of barnyard mixes and some dorking eggs in it :)
That was my story tommysgirl, glad you enjoyed it. Hank & Heather were really cool pets. I shared a ways back that Hank was in love with my dad's old 56 Caddie. My parents live next door and Hank would go up there in the mornings and stare at himself if the big chrome bumper and when my dad would come out to go to work Hank would attack him! I'd get the call to call my bleeping goose! I'd holler up for Hank and he'd come home grumbling and waddling all the way!

We called it the continuing saga of Hank & Heather! Miss those two!
Quote: Yes, it is in a Mal position. There are several types of mal position and all of them are bad for the chick. Up side down chicks are often that way because there is something wrong with them. It is almost always impossible for one to hatch because the chick is scrunched up with the big end of the chick in the small end. They cannot turn to zip the shell open.

Lucky that the pip missed a vein. In 24 hours when you help it out, be very careful of the veins. Make sure to open up the area around the beak and make sure no liquid gets in. And of course if you can without hurting the other chicks(you always want to make sure you do not help this one and sacrifice others hatching--Odds are 50% that this one is a goner anyway), turn the chick to the head up position.

Happy hatching! 13 Bresse to lockdown today.
Ron, you have way more hatching experience then I do, should she wait the 24 hours or just start helping now....maybe just pop a couple spots around the pip and see if the chick will take it from there?
Thank you BigDaddysMom and Ron,

I assisted 1 from my first hatch, but my thinking was to do nothing for 24 hours. I'm checking the pips progress against the carton, if it goes to the right, (clockwise), it will be much easier going.

Mariah and I worked out our teamwork with the first assist, now that she knows what we're trying to do it should go even better.

Hurray, #3 knows which end is up!
Glad #3 knows the right end.....after I saw Ron's post I wondered if you should wait at all. I asked his advice on moving sooner.

We always wanted to live in that lighthouse! Though it would be SO fun but did discuss the lack of privacy, but you really can't blame people for wandering around.....and with all my years in retail I'll tell you, people don't read signs and if they do they don't believe it applies to them!

We have a long driveway too and I can't believe the people that will just drive in, drive by the house, even with us outside, pass us and drive up by the barn then try to get out our back gate that is always closed to keep people from trying to come in the back gate! People just drive without a care that it's someones property and clearly not a road!
Wow, that looks like such a well planned hatching! All those chicks look like they hatched on que! What a great idea for keeping them separated. It's a concern of mine when I decided to buy an incubator....I can see how easy, for myself, that I could become overzealous in hatching and I need to think about how I'm going to do it responsibly before the incubator gets here!

Love the pergola! What a beautiful place you have! You'll certainly enjoy some fun times under it this summer.

Awe, I wasn't judging you, just wondered what to do in such a situation. I was just talking to someone about the same scenario since I will have an Ameraucana roo and plan on adding a Marans roo. Having those two roos would produce EE's, OE's or Marans,so essentialy no mutts but we were saying how they'd all look pretty similar as chicks and would have to separate out Marans, clear them of the chance of the Ameraucana's sperm to ensure pure Marans. Since pricing would be different for pure Marans, I would need to ensure they're pure but on the off season I could let them all together and still offer a desired chick. I think these incubators can make it pretty easy to mix it up. I so appreciate this conversation because it's something I want to get clear in my head before my excitment gets me in trouble! :D
Beautiful! Is that a Brinsea? Did you add the padding part or does that come with the incubator? So that works to keep them upright? I used the egg cartons in my sucky incubator but this looks like they're snug as a bug in a rug! Did I mention mine will be here tomorrow??? EEEEECKKK!!!:ya
What kind of bands do you use and where's the best place to purchase them. I looked at our local feed store today on the off chance they'd have them but they didn't.
Wow, I've never seen one with a yoke but not any sign of a shell. Looks like a jelly fish. Someones having a lot of trouble with the shell portion of their egg maker!

Oh I didn't feel judged. I figured you wanted info so I got loquacious. Right now my marans eggs are possibly OE or marans. So. Sell them as OE with a surprise side of purebreeds and charge a wee bit more then OE eggs. 2 more weeks and I'm back to fcbm for the year. I have just hatched so many fcbms I can tell if its mixed.

The oes will look a lot like marans and should have some foot feathering BuT not as strong. They also walk upright and about 35% had muffs. My boys get copper in the neck faster then the pures too. Don't know if that will be true of your crosses.

There are a ton of salesman going door to door here (woodland)! They nearly always disregard me when I say that I'm not interested. I must look like an easy mark!

People up your driveway IS creepy. When we lived downtown before we had a lady of the night in the front apartment for a few months, and our bedroom window was right next to the back porch. A few people thought we were her and would knock on my window hopefully. That's when an an irate sleepy husband comes in handy. Mario looks like a lot of things, buy a professional boy toy is not one of them, lol.

ROFL about that bolded part! That is AWESOME!

I would get a paper towel and wet it. Open the top of the incubator, drop in the paper towel and turn the chick over so that it is not upside down. I would calmly but quickly make sure the pip was open enough to let the chick breath and that there was no shrink wrapping around the beak. Close the lid and keep an eye on the upside down one. If it seems to be getting weaker, then see if you can gently get it out.

The Blue egg layer that did not pip--It is doing fine by the way--Bled so I put it back in. I waited half a day and then when the veins were dry got it out of the shell. There was a yolk thing still there, so I put it back into the incubator inside the shell. several hours later my daughters said it looked like the guy was not doing well so I set It onto the wire. It took it another hour or so but the piece of yolk came off by itself and the chick perked up by the next morning.

If they are going to make it then they will. This was from shipped eggs. They are more likely to have mal positions because of the shipping and be ok. This one did not pip because the head was caught under the wing. That is not as bad as upside down but still makes it so that the chick can't get out.

Some have figured out how to help a chick out by using chop sticks through the vent hole. The paper towel helps to get the humidity back up quickly.

Go little chicken!

Quote: This week it was the Kirby Vacuum sales again. They say: "I am here to clean your carpets!" Kids come by to give me a paper and subscribe to the local paper. I already get the local paper...It was a lot of fun when we had the Pit Bull!

Oh boy, now I feel like one of those grouches from the Muppets....
