In Woodland we get door to door salesmen. One time I told a guy that I was not interested. He was miffed and said he had not gotten to give me his sales pitch! I told him that he did not have a right to force me to listen to him on my private property. You should have heard him cuss as he walked away. Nearly as bad as the teen agers showing up wanting me to buy candy from them to keep them away from a life of crime.....
That was my story tommysgirl, glad you enjoyed it. Hank & Heather were really cool pets. I shared a ways back that Hank was in love with my dad's old 56 Caddie. My parents live next door and Hank would go up there in the mornings and stare at himself if the big chrome bumper and when my dad would come out to go to work Hank would attack him! I'd get the call to call my bleeping goose! I'd holler up for Hank and he'd come home grumbling and waddling all the way!I love the goose story threadgeek. You tell it so well. Also love the baby pics and the thought of waking up to a bator full of chicks. I am setting eggs aroung 4/3 to time the hatch more or less with the arrival of my chicks from Ideal, Partridge Rocks and Privett, Speckled Sussex, CA Grey, Easter Egger, Black Star and Delawares. I hope I don't screw it up it will have a variety of barnyard mixes and some dorking eggs in it

Lucky that the pip missed a vein. In 24 hours when you help it out, be very careful of the veins. Make sure to open up the area around the beak and make sure no liquid gets in. And of course if you can without hurting the other chicks(you always want to make sure you do not help this one and sacrifice others hatching--Odds are 50% that this one is a goner anyway), turn the chick to the head up position.

Ron, you have way more hatching experience then I do, should she wait the 24 hours or just start helping now....maybe just pop a couple spots around the pip and see if the chick will take it from there?
Glad #3 knows the right end.....after I saw Ron's post I wondered if you should wait at all. I asked his advice on moving sooner.

We have a long driveway too and I can't believe the people that will just drive in, drive by the house, even with us outside, pass us and drive up by the barn then try to get out our back gate that is always closed to keep people from trying to come in the back gate! People just drive without a care that it's someones property and clearly not a road!
Wow, that looks like such a well planned hatching! All those chicks look like they hatched on que! What a great idea for keeping them separated. It's a concern of mine when I decided to buy an incubator....I can see how easy, for myself, that I could become overzealous in hatching and I need to think about how I'm going to do it responsibly before the incubator gets here!

Awe, I wasn't judging you, just wondered what to do in such a situation. I was just talking to someone about the same scenario since I will have an Ameraucana roo and plan on adding a Marans roo. Having those two roos would produce EE's, OE's or Marans,so essentialy no mutts but we were saying how they'd all look pretty similar as chicks and would have to separate out Marans, clear them of the chance of the Ameraucana's sperm to ensure pure Marans. Since pricing would be different for pure Marans, I would need to ensure they're pure but on the off season I could let them all together and still offer a desired chick. I think these incubators can make it pretty easy to mix it up. I so appreciate this conversation because it's something I want to get clear in my head before my excitment gets me in trouble!
Beautiful! Is that a Brinsea? Did you add the padding part or does that come with the incubator? So that works to keep them upright? I used the egg cartons in my sucky incubator but this looks like they're snug as a bug in a rug! Did I mention mine will be here tomorrow??? EEEEECKKK!!!
What kind of bands do you use and where's the best place to purchase them. I looked at our local feed store today on the off chance they'd have them but they didn't.
Wow, I've never seen one with a yoke but not any sign of a shell. Looks like a jelly fish. Someones having a lot of trouble with the shell portion of their egg maker!

I would get a paper towel and wet it. Open the top of the incubator, drop in the paper towel and turn the chick over so that it is not upside down. I would calmly but quickly make sure the pip was open enough to let the chick breath and that there was no shrink wrapping around the beak. Close the lid and keep an eye on the upside down one. If it seems to be getting weaker, then see if you can gently get it out.
The Blue egg layer that did not pip--It is doing fine by the way--Bled so I put it back in. I waited half a day and then when the veins were dry got it out of the shell. There was a yolk thing still there, so I put it back into the incubator inside the shell. several hours later my daughters said it looked like the guy was not doing well so I set It onto the wire. It took it another hour or so but the piece of yolk came off by itself and the chick perked up by the next morning.
If they are going to make it then they will. This was from shipped eggs. They are more likely to have mal positions because of the shipping and be ok. This one did not pip because the head was caught under the wing. That is not as bad as upside down but still makes it so that the chick can't get out.
Some have figured out how to help a chick out by using chop sticks through the vent hole. The paper towel helps to get the humidity back up quickly.
