well good news is that it is not actually transmitted to eggs. So, looks like a locked down coop and frequent testing may allow me to keep my jubilees. Not gonna do that with the other birds too much work to worry about more than one isolated coop. Also my backyard flock clearly has the very mild version of ILT if it is confirmed as I only had one mortality in 28 chickens, and only 7-8 showed any symptoms. Still hoping that my results will come back negative. I guess there's always a chance. hope, pray, hope, pray. we will know if a few days. In the meantime I have a big weekend ahead of me moving about 50-60 chickens to redding this weekend. busy ,busy.

That's too bad

I hope the report comes back clear any way. I always hope the problem is something simple like Mites or worms.

This weekend should be ok for moving the chickens--its supposed to cool down tomorrow.

Did the Rhodebars come from Greenfire? If so did you contact them or the person you got them from?

Jules had something similar happen. She said her Bantams were ok. Maybe you should pm her to compare notes.

I have 46(not counting the eggs in the incubator-don't count your eggs until they hatch). They are all large fowl. I have:

Year old Laying Hens:
4 Black Australorps
3 Hatchery RIRs
2 Barred Rocks
2 Golden Comets

Started Pullets(I hatched these)
smile.png
:
1 Blue Marans
1 EE

McMurray Chicks: 15 and 16 weeks
1 SG Dorking Cockerel
2 Partridge Rock Pullets
3 Partridge Rock Cockerels

9 Week old EEs(Buff Americauna x SG Dorking accidental Project(I hatched these too):
1 Cockerel
2 Pullets

8 week old FBC Marans Ok, I hatched all the them but the older ones and the McMurray chicks):
5 Pullets
2 Cockerels

7 Week old EO Marraduna Basque:
5 Cockerels
6 Pullets

6 week old Crested Cream Legbars:
1 Pullet
1 Cockerel

4 week old Crested Cream Legbars:
1 Cockerel
2 Pullets

3 week old SQ Heritage RIR:
1 too young to tell. Built like a tank this one.

According to the Rules of Chicken Math I don't have that many. I am not allowed to have roosters, so those don't count. Also, you only count each breed as one. Still over my limit....

Guess what, I am going to build a new grow out pen his weekend. I better get some eggs to the neighbors and work on fly control.

I saw one several years ago at my house in town.

The weirder one is the Bicycle they used to map the UCD Campus.

Ron, that is a wonderful assortment of poultry! I have seen several of your varieties in the catalogs and hope to purchase some one day. In fact, I was just looking at the pictures of the black Austratlorps in the "Murray McMurray" catalog last night. I can definitely see some of those beauties in my future.

We are building a second coop in the next few weeks for our new batch of chicks. I am currently incubating two of my chicken eggs in a small incubator. I am waiting to see if they are fertile. I have not hatched out any chicks as of yet. I did have success hatching a mallard duckling a couple of months ago. He imprinted on me and has been an adorable, little guy. Do you sell your chickens or just collect them for fun? Are roosters not allowed in your area? Although I live out in the counrty, and have quite a bit of space between neighbours, roosters are not very popular in my community.Luckily, my little bantam rooster, is not overly loud and has not been a problem with neighbors. My four bantam chicks are strait run. I am hoping that they turn out to be pullets. I will be keeping them regardless.

Thank you for sharing your list of chickens!!

I will have 15 hens for a layer flock and keep two breeding pens. One for EO Basque and the other for Crested Cream Legbars. The rest will be sold or given away. I will have to hide the Roosters. They are not allowed here. So far, I am moving the two that crow now into the Garage at night. I might make some Rooster Boxes--plastic storage container with vent holes lined with carpet. You put the box over the Rooster at night. I will be keeping two roosters so that should not be a problem. I am following the nuisance codes--no loud noise(there is a decibel level) between 10:00 pm and 7:00 am.

In the country, the only thing that bothered me were the Pea Cocks. They screeched out something that sounded like "Help Me" in the middle of the night. That often woke me up with a start.

I often just go out and stare at the chickens. They are so colorful. Of course they sometimes think a freckle is something to eat.

. They also find my ring to be something to peck at. Yes, get some Black Australorps. For me they are the perfect blend of Docile and Independent. They get along well with the other chickens and they lay eggs in the heat and the winter. Their eggs aren't the largest, but they are a large egg. Noticeably larger than the Dorking eggs. If I had to choose two breeds, I would pick the EO Basque and the Black Australorps. One day they may make up most of my Layer flock along with Cream Legbars and FBC Marans. Those would make a pretty egg basket...

I completely understant trying to hide your roosters.

I was a nervous wreck when Rocky first started crowing! I kept imagining my neighbors coming over and complaining about the noise. Happily, everyone has been great. My one neighbor seems to enjoy the sound.

The rooster box sounds like a great idea. I may have to try that if my bantam chicks turn out to be cockerels. Thank you for your information on the Australorps and other varieties. I will definitely have to adopt some in the future! I know what you mean about just enjoying viewing the chickens. It is so relaxing to watch all of their fun and silly antics. I just love my peeps!

I just read this. Maybe it will help Jules and Jeff:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I did not have to, for the peafowl that first came down with, got it again within a week after I had treated them. So, Denagard only makes them better, but does not make the disease to go away.

I will be doing it this way- Treat the flock with Denagard again, and while the Denagard is in the bird's system, and MG is lower, then save the eggs from that period of time for 3 weeks. When 3 weeks are up, kill all the birds, when the last birds are gone, dip the eggs in Tylan solution before incubating.

Hi Meg,

You should start seeing some little fluffy feathers in the brooder. They get pretty ugly when they Molt. They go through several and really look like monsters between 5 and 7 weeks. They go through another one before laying at around 15 weeks or so. They will look beautiful when the new feathers come in.

Give them some extra protein. Cook them up some beans or give them some scrambled ore hard boiled eggs.

Ron
Thanks Ron. They won't get a taste for eggs if I give them a hardboiled egg? Little monsters huh? haha

I talked to UC Davis today and they told me that two of my tests came back. They said that the lungs were positive for ecoli and both the lungs & liver contained mixed flora. How on earth did my chicks get ecoli???!

Quote: This is from a web search:

The primary routes of invasion by the organism are the respiratory system and the gastrointestinal tract. Omphalitis and infections in young birds may result from entry through the unhealed navel or penetration of the egg shell prior to or during incubation

So, either from where they hatched or from something they ate. You had food that looked bad and you returned it to the store? That is my guess. Other than them eating stuff they souldn't eat or exposing them to infected manure, that would be the most likely cause.

Keep giving the ones that are alive a bit of yogurt each mornng, and no, the cooked eggs won't make them become egg eaters. They are easily fooled and don't associate cooked eggs with those things in the nest box.

I will send a pm for the swap site.
