Now this seems like a good thread with very nice chicken people! I think I'll stay and listen for a while...

Is anyone near the Sierra Nevada mountains. I'm on top of them ;-)

WINDY! That's all so far. We're expecting it to stick at midnight but nothing is even falling yet. That's FINE with me! I have welsummer eggs coming on the 7th

Wow, the thread was busy today, it took me forever to catch up!

Those are for extra humidity. They have a slot in the top and for incubation they fit on the rail of the egg turner.

Two of them raise the humidity and I do not have to hunt for the water channel.
Brilliant! I have some of those and will be adding them to my incubator!

Some quail have more personality then others. We name some and they do get more special treat emnt. Bubbah Is our HUGE crotechty female. her eggs are 1/2 again as large as anyone else, and when she is in a bad mood she beats the boys up. She got bumblefoot and still limps a little and gets a foot bath in epsom salts every once in a while. She will be here till she drops, mario loves her to pieces and she comes to him when she is in a good mood and trills. Strangefeather was a male who had a single twisted feather in his neck and was the sweetest quail to other birds. He used to take care of the babies when he was growing up, and I used him as a shepard in the little hoppers cages until he was an adult. The girls all loved him, and he got along well with theother roos. he was a bit small for ideal breeding, but passed his personalitly on to the chicks. I saw markedly less problems with people who got birds from that cage setting up theri pens. Sadly he passed this winter from causes unknown. Quail just up and die on occation.

Gimpy and wiggles were a pair of quail we eventually rehomed as pets to a guy who was raising quail for their kids. Gimpy was a neuter and wiggles was its big italian buff friend. Gimp had a limp from a funny hip. Wiggles used to keep everyone away from its so she could run around and play.

I can tell more stories like that. Not all quail have personalities ( or you could never eat them!) But those that do are precious and entertaining.
......

How is everyone this morning? I have been somehow busy this last week or so, not sure HOW i got so busy, does not seem like a got a ton done! It is a beautiful day but the chicks are getting wild, they are jumping out of the mini brooders and running around the floor. They should be moved out into the garage but I was putting it off and now its like chicks gone wild in here with them sneaking on the top of the warterers, jumping out of the cages and trying to run over my keybord. The cages are mostly covered but they are sneaking out the extra spots! I blame the leghorns they have taught everyone to fly!
I LOVE the quail and chick stories!

I can't wait for my chicks to hatch and be running all over the place. I'm only incubating 24 though so it wont be too crazy... this time.

Quote: We have birdfeeders up for the chickadees and such, I call it the Bird Buffet (for the predators). Why can't the bobcats just be happy with the doves???

I kid; I would actually be really sad if I saw a bobcat eating the birdies around my house.

Just want to share some egg pics from this past week. My Langshan girls (except for 2 special ones) are all headed to the farm tonight to join the boys. I am so sad that I won't be able to look out my back door and see them. But I do want Langshan babies so have to get the boys and girls together for that to happen!

Darker brown eggs are Langshan eggs and the lighter 3 in the center are Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock eggs

Blue eggs left to right: Cream Legbar, Blue Wheaten Ameraucana, Lavender Ameraucana, Lav Am, and the little fart egg is from my Silver AM, I think!
Beautiful eggs!!! I can't wait for my lavender ameraucanas to hatch... and Cream Legbars are on my MUST HAVE list!

Balthazar is still with us. He seems a bit more lively today, but I'm not sure how much of that is wishful thinking. (He has suet-type treat on his beak)
Yeah! So happy he is still doing well! Keep it up buddy!

The faces on the other birdies are priceless!

Flowers... Welcome to the thread!!!!!

Crazy winds here!

I hope my electricity dosent go out

Its been RAINING here in Scotts Valley (Santa Cruz mountains). I'm just worried that the power might go out in the night and my incubator temp would drop. I just want to KNOW if the power goes out so we can get the generator running!
fl.gif
Yes, we would run the generator just for the incubator. My DH says he will build me a backup battery pack for it eventually.

You are added to the list! My 8 pullets that are the start of my breeding program went out to the farm this evening. The boys have been there since before Christmas so tomorrow will be reunion time! Those poor girls don't know what they have in store! I love my Langshans and I am going to miss seeing them in my backyard. I still have 2 blue in my layer flock. One has foot problems and the other is Jewel my penguin bird. We are going to work on getting the breeding pens built this month and hopefully by next month we will have fertile eggs. I really want to hatch my own Langshan eggs in my new incubator with a hatch date on my birthday in May!

Yay! Can't wait. It would be so exciting to hatch your own birds.
