You're singing my song here! I actually did start a notebook. Guess what..... I can't find it!

So now I have tons of bookmarks in my chicken stuff folder. Took me a while to figure out how to do that too. I feel like a dinosaur sometimes, or else living in the wrong century.

It's so sad...... I get it about losing the notebook. You should see my kitchen table. It is full of "important" stuff I don't want to loose. If I can't SEE it it no longer seems to exist. There is no more of that putting it in a safe place, because it is soooooo safe I can't find it again.

Full of all kinds of good advice.... if I could just remember it!

Quail will pass chick/no chick but have thick shells and are hard to see through. If your flashlight is small enough get a piece of plumbing coupling that is the size of your flashlight on on side and either 1/2 inch (quail) or 3/4 (chicken). This will focus the light enough to use it for a candler. If you want to get a good inexpensive flashlight that is 400 lumes try the Cree q5 led off amazon or some less evil retailer.

Quail that does not have a chick in it will have the light shining through the egg and and be faintly blue. Those that have a chick will look kind of full and not shine the light on the top.

If you have a few of each you'll be able to tell. If they are all one or the other it might be harder.
Since Coturnix are only 17ish days to hatch, what day would be a good day to check? 7, 8, 9? I am getting anxious to try now.

The Store in Davis is small too. They are very good about ordering for me. Before it opened I drove to Sacramento to get the feed. Now I can pick it up on my lunch break.

They have one that looks bigger in Orangevale which isn't too far from me either. I need game bird starter, assuming my quail actually hatch! Got a 10% off coupon in the mail for the new on here in Roseville just yesterday. Gonna have to go see if it works.

Hello wonderful people of the Nor Cal thread! I'm writing a paper about bedding for chicks & adult chickens.

Currently I have newspaper, cedar shavings and straw/hay for bedding not to use for chicks. (Though I know some people use hay/straw for their chicks and have been successful, it's a tough call).

Any suggestions?

So, my chicks in the brooder have cocci. One died this morning but several others have bloody poop and standing hunched up.

I started them on Sulmet. I don't have Corid. I'm taking them out one by one and making sure they are getting the medicated water. I'm just dripping a tiny drop on the end of their beak and they drink about every 3rd or 4th drop. Anything else that I can do to help them?

Ron, I'm assuming it's too late to put a piece of sod in the brooder, correct?

I'll remove this if it bothers anyone. Here was our sweet baby.

My daughter (6 years old) wrote this poem for her:

Babe
Cluck Cluck Cluck
at the meadow's end
Cluck Cluck Cluck
says the chick at dusk

Winter is Cool and Summer is warm
but oh what a beautiful place Spring is.
Sorry to hear about you chick. Tell your daughter that her poem is beautiful.

Have you changed all the bedding? You should also make sure food and water dish are well cleaned with soap

I am so sorry!

The sod is for when they are very little. I see that Deanne gave advice and I agree about cleaning.

I have not used Sulmet but with corid you give them half the dose after the initial treatment. The first treatment kills the coci and the second at half dose helps them to build immunity. Coci is everywhere so you cannot get rid of it. The chickens have to build up resistance to it. It is not usually a problem after 16 weeks or so.

I hope it works quickly!
