Black Australorps. They are a smaller version of the Oprington. They are one of my favorite breeds.
I can't keep up with you guys!!!LOL I just wanted to update anybody interested on my sick EE, Flossie. She's been on the Duramycin, ACV, Probiotics & no dairy for 2 full days. She has laid the last 2 days, she's keeping up her appetite, too, but the cough is still there. It's more like a honking sometimes. I haven't seen much nasal drainage anymore, but she still sneezes. So far so good on the rest of my girls!! No signs of any cough & with quite a bit of probiotic, ACV, oat bran, yogurt & buttermilk with garlic water, their poo is getting better!!! YAY! I hope Flossie kicks this cough quickly.![]()
Do I stay on the Duramycin for 14 days no matter what?
I hope everybody is doing well.
Yes!!! Thanks for all of your help and assurance, Ron. I've been putting her outside in an isolation run & she starts to get antsy & I bring her back to her crate & she lays in a 5 gallon bucketThank you for the update!
Laying eggs, normal eggs, is a great sign!![]()
Quote: Changes in routine or environment will make them slow down. Mine usually pick up quickly! Yesterday was slow after I move a new chicken into the layer yard. They laid like crazy today though.
I also moved a new coop with some teenagers right next to the ladies' outside pen & they have been sitting quietly watching each other! lol I'm sure they will make up for it. Too bad it will be a few more days until we can have the eggs from them after the Wazine... another week...Changes in routine or environment will make them slow down. Mine usually pick up quickly! I've got BC Marans in the incubator now. I just sold the last batch last weekend. The first guy out took them all. My egg color has been pretty good and my breeding group have done fairly well at the shows.
Quote: Thank you for the suggestion. I checked and there doesn't seem to be WNV in the Santa Cruz area. BTW, your egg color is fabulous!!!BCMs are on my "must have" list and your birds look gorgeous! So sad that I'm not closer!![]()
Thanks so much for the advice. I found a couple web sources that referenced salmonella in my county, but this was more in the farming areas. Nonetheless, another website listed salmonella as the most common sickness wild birds suffer from. Ugh. Now I'm paranoid that my hens have been exposed! It's been about 8 years now, but I had finches and other songbirds dying all around my house. I called regional Fish & Wildlife and was told the birds were bringing Salmanella with them when they migrated in. You might try them and see if there is an outbreak of something locally. They would be a place to start anyway.
Mine find the tiny watersnakes when they hatch here in August, I hate it when they get the little snakes and frogs. It seems though that they are less likely to get sick if their immune systems are good so I will be making sure they get their yogurt daily. I'm also going to look into adding ACV to their water. Any other suggestions would be much appreciated!![]()
