California - Northern

Yay, a Northern CA thread! First time posting on this thread, so hi everyone! We live right at the "elbow" of Nor. CA; anyone know where Camino is? Just east of Placerville? We technically live in Camino, but we are eight miles down a dirt road so I don't technically consider us to be in Camino... I have been calling our "area" Cougar Ridge...

We only moved down to Camino/"Cougar Ridge" last fall... soooo glad to be out of Pollock Pines (a few more miles east-ish)... all the neighbors except one constantly complained about our chickens (and guinea fowl, I don't blame them for that), even after we offered them fresh eggs...

I actually am not sure it was legal for us to have chickens, we were probably very lucky no one called the police...

welcome to the thread. I know where you are. I am down sly park rd east of Pleasant Valley but go to Boa Vista weekley

Here's our two. Hard to get them to hold still. I had to take a bunch of shots just to get a few decent ones. This was a few days after we got them. The seller wasn't exactly sure of the age, but he thought 2 weeks. Donut Coffee These were taken today, about a week later, so possibly 3 weeks old or so? Donut is much larger than Coffee. Thinking Donut is a little roo. He likes to spar! We are impressed with how calm and friendly these guys are. My son was holding Donut a couple of feet from the cage and Coffee flew over and landed on his arm.
They are adorable! Donut looks pretty rooish to me too. As soon as it gets light outside I'll snap some pics for comparison.

Welcome to the thread! Those guinea fowl are sure unique aren't they? When I was growing up our lovely neighbor killed our free range flock with a shotgun since they went in his yard.

For moving to a place that is poultry friendly!

It is great to hear from you!

Lynda, they're looking good. Donut is most likely a roo (pinking up comb), but Coffee still appears to be a pullet. Give it another week. I like the dark chick quite well!

Welcome to the thread! I live in Shingle Springs, but still have a house in Cedar Grove. My parents built a house at the end of Cable Rd in the 1960's, so I know exactly where Camino is, LOL

Are they still talking about putting a TSC in the old Mt. Democrat building (previously Blue Shield, previously Safeway...................see, I have lived here a long time, LOL)?

Welcome to all those just joining us!

Does everyone put the eggs in a carton at lockdown? What is the benefit of this?
Yep. Keeps the first chicks hatched from kicking all the eggs around. I too cut the carton in half and spread them out in the bator.

Donut looks like a cockerel to me.

Cute chicks and names!

Good morning Northern California!

It is crisp this morning but should be warm this afternoon. Ducks go into lockdown in two days. This is my first time with ducks and I am happy that they get to go to a from in winters as soon as they hatch!

TSC is Tractor Supply Center. It is like the old PV Ranch and supply stores. They hold special events in Woodland and allow locals to bring in their animals. Sometimes they have little petting zoos. You can order from their website too.

Yes! They're pretty tricky. That's why we have ducks. Although I got a big Breyer horse for my daughter there on sale there for $10.99! That was pretty cool.

Tsw is fun. We go to the one in gilroy to get medicine. Our local feed stores don't have all the fancy stuff. I loved breyer horses when I was young. They were my dolls and I had hundreds of them. Such fun!
I only worry because they cannot get to her to stay warm at night if I don't move them.  Tonight, when I got home, one of the chicks was roosting under her wing.  Cutest thing EVER!  The other 2 were down on the ladder rungs with no heat source.  They are almost 5 weeks old, so not quite feathered enough that I feel comfortable leaving them like that.  It is currently about 35 degrees, dipping into the high 20's before dawn.  As soon as I put them in the brooder, she wanted to come down and join them in there, so I patiently held the light while she worked her way down.

The other "issue" that I have seen is that they can still get through the 2" x 4" holes in the fence.  The gates are open, but when the chicks work their way to the other side of the fence, mom gets upset and can't quite work out how to go around.  Most days, my kids and I are home to help out in these situations, but Tuesdays, we are gone from 8 am to 7 pm.  My husband will be home until noon tomorrow, so I think I will let them all out in the morning, then hope they do OK until I get home.

I totally agree with wanting to let the hen raise them naturally, but I also want to make sure they survive, KWIM?

You can also put them on the roost with her. Sounds like she is trying to teach them to roost. She thinks they are ready. But hens are not terribly bright.

Ester my last broody used to jump up on a chair and sit Down to warm her chicks.....who were running around on the floor peeping. She does not have the best track record.

Welcome new people! I have been catching up on my phone so I can't quote from the last day, but it is good to see you all here.

Threadgeek, if you ending up wanting marans eggs or chicks later my eggs will be pure this week. I'll be putting them in and will have chicks next month' so yell if you care. I love marans they are both beautiful and fun.

Exciting news on the bresse ( otherwise known as the goonie birds) ! They have started mating, so I am expecting eggs soonish! I am going to clean out the bottom coop for laying boxes as soon as it dries out.

Mario brought a huge wooden box from engine parts I am going to use as a brooder. I think I'm going to try the sand litter box method. Now I just need to fin a big scoop that will pick up tiny poo.

We are covered in mist this morning. It is the first time this ear. Last year we were misty almost every morning I missed it.

Quote: Mist is very pretty. I saw vapor coming off of someone irrigating Alfalfa Hay. Here in the valley we either get that or Tule fog....

I blew out two eggs for you this morning. PM a shipping address and I will work on sending them to you!
