I believe Aspergillis is a fungus, isn't it? So that bad feed you mentioned would definitely be a prime suspect. I'm glad it was that and not something contagious!

As far as I can tell yes it's a fungus. I never had bad food but think I put some bad hay in their brooder at first (as bedding). The weird thing is, the brooder has been hay free since the last one passed 1 1/2 weeks ago. Maybe my sick chick that I have now has been sick all along but is just now showing signs.

I got my necropsy full report back! It looks like the chick had Aspergillosis. They found lesions in its trachea that probably caused the chick to suffocate. It sounds like it's from inhaling something bad. So sad! I wish I knew what it was that caused it. The Pathologist said that Asperigillosis isn't contagious so I don't have to worry about my other chicks contracting it. But the worst part is that one of my two remaining Barnevelder chicks is acting sick today. They're 4 1/2 weeks old. I put Save-A-Chick (both the vitamin/mineral supplement AND the probiotic supplement) in their water today. I was able to get the little guy to drink a little. He starting eating right after so that makes me hopeful. There was a medicine the feed store recommended (started with a D and helps fight fungal infections) but both feed stories near me are out! I'm going to see if I can get some tomorrow if the little guy makes it. Keep your fingers crossed!

Zoo - That coop is awesome. At least you have the basic structure there and set up! The hardest part for us was building the frame.. everything else went by quickly and pretty easily. I'm stealing your coops nesting box design! That's exactly what I want/need! About vaccinating: I'm not the best person to answer this since I didn't vaccinate and lost 3 out of 5 of my chicks in the first 1 1/2 weeks (not to mention I have a 4th acting sick now.) We didn't do any vaccinations and didn't do medicated feed. I don't know if I'll ever do vaccinations but I am thinking of getting my next round of chicks medicated feed. Then again, I was told even if I vaccinated and gave medicated food it probably wouldn't have made a difference. I think it's a personal decision and can be a pretty hard one to make.
That is Black Mold? It probably did come from the straw. Sorry about that, but at least you know what it was. Check the chick for Cochi. Sometimes they can be exposed to it when little and get it even with medicated food. Look for odd bloody looking poo. It's probably not that--just something to check for.
Quote: The EO Basque eggs:

15 set on March 17, 2002 after a 24 hour rest. I did not turn them for 2 days.
Checked Air cells on day 7. All developing with one clear, I left it in to make sure.
Day 10 Candling showed 1 clear that I removed.
April 3, day 18, 13 moved to Hatcher
April 5, Hatching started over night and finished by the evening of April 6.
11 hatched and moved to Brooder on April 7

At day 3 after hatch, feather color of black showed 6 black and 5 white. They wound up being 6 pullets and 5 cockerels.

I keep a hatching log for my hatches. This was the best for shipped eggs.

Zooweemama..............that aluminum stuff gets really hot. I would use wood to predator proof the sides and front. It would also help sturdy the leaning walls. I'd leave 18-24 inches at the top open (but screened with hardware cloth, not chicken wire) for ventilation and light. Light is very important in winter. Choose the sides that are not where the storms come from to keep it dry inside. And close in the critter holes, you don't want to attract rodents.

Just about anything can get through chicken wire. A raccoon got through this. It was a 1 inch by 2 inch opening that a fully grown Orpington was pulled through. The opening is in my grow out coop and it's now permanently screwed shut. The wooden flap would lift up for ventilation.

Woot! The City of Yreka (Northern-Northern California) passed Measure M, which allows up to six backyard hens! I just looked back at the thread I started when this all began, and it has been 15 months we have been working towards this. Finally! I feel like quoting Dr. MLK Jr. "Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free [to have hens] at last!"

Congrats!!!!!

Do you mean remove the chicken wire that is around the entire coop? Or the floor? I will price out the hardware cloth needed either today or Sunday.

I am impressed the hens will be able to jump up there! LOL!

Thank you so much!
Yes, I like sand because it drains well and the droppings seem to dry out faster. A few inches is fine with a kick board around the outside to keep the sand inside. The chickens love to dust bathe in it. We just go to a gravel yard and get a yard of their cheapest sand. It would cost way more to buy it in bags at Home Depot.

Hardware cloth is the way to go if you can afford it for the sides. We put 1x2 wire on the floor under the sand. You could put it right on top of what you currently have down after raking.

No sign of bloody poops! I'm thankful for that! The sick one is fading fast though. Such a bummer! I'm just hoping my last one doesn't have it. Thanks for the dates!

I am so sorry for the loss of your Barnies

How many do you have left?

The person I got my Marans hatching eggs from had one chicken die from mold, but the others recovered. It's probably harder on the young ones.

I hope you get that medicine. If the mold is in the wood, you treat with copper sulfate. Hopefully getting rid of the straw got rid of the mold.

I wish I could multi quote from other threads...Oh, I guess I can

Your little EOs are too small to hurt a three year old. When they get older you might need to worry about it. Roosters sometimes get into a terrible teens stage for a while but they usually settle down. He is so nice now...wait this does not apply to Roos only, but often the opposite is true--little children can hurt the chicks.

When he weighs 8 to 10 pounds and has spurs he could hurt a three year old, so yes be careful then. They are so nice now but you never know.

None of my other breeds got testy at point of lay. They all have become friendlier. I look forward to seeing what the Basque do at POL.

Bye,

Pics! I find it annoying to take pics, send to my email, then save then upload...this is easier. Sorry you have to click on links. I am an instagram addict.
