California - Northern

I am on the coast and get a few flakes every two or three years

Not something I ever have to worry about. Just rain and fog...

My ideal place would be in the snowy-ish mountains next to the ocean

Been a tough day...I guess it's been 17 years since I lost my mom on this day. She's been on my mind all day as I visited with my chickens, planted in the garden and even as I'm doing laundry.

She was such an inspiration to me. She taught me how to sew at just 5 years old. Taught me how to cook her delicious recipes and to be creative in the kitchen. We always had crafts of some sort or another set up on the dining room table and always something on the sewing machine table, that never got put away. She was a wonderfully creative and precisioned seamstress. We would change and make patterns together. It was such a special time. No doubt why I became a fashion designer.

I miss her terribly, but I'm so grateful for our life together.

Empty Little Giant Still Air holding steady at 100.2 and 10% humidity for several hours. That's good right? I am going for the dry hatch but is 10% too low? ChooksChick says to ignore humidity until you see the first pip...should I expect it to come up when I put the eggs in there?

This morning in church I found myself asking God to hold these eggs in the palm of his hand when they were in transit...I am a nervous nelly and the eggs are weeks away from being laid!!! :-D

Cheryl: I am so sorry that you are missing your mom but happy that you seem to have such warm memories.

Glad you have all the great memories. My dad turned 79 yesterday and my mom will in December. I cherish all the time I spend with them.

What's an HQ hen?

I'm still such a noob!

Okay, so roof it. Like will PVC or 2x2" framing with small chicken wire or hardware cloth be sufficient? The chickens will indeed be locked up tight every evening.

Yup, nice way of saying.............feedstore birds, LOL. Hardware cloth is always your best choice. Chicken wire will work to keep out hawks, it's like tissue paper for racoons, opossum & skunks. But as long as your birds are locked up at night, the chicken wire will be fine to cover their daytime run. Generally even woven flight netting will do against hawks unless they are super determined.

Lookee what I got!

LOL, it looks like that roo is stalking the hen. Always nice to see a mama out with her babies.

That is a very touching tribute to your Mom!

Renee lives in Kansas--much more humid than here. Shoot for 25% for a Dry Hatch. If there are hat problems form humidity issue, raise humidity 5% for the next hatch.

That's kind of what I was thinking so I should put water in a well then right?
