Many year ago, I used to work at an all night gas station on the graveyard shift. I started getting obscene phone calls in the middle of the night almost every night. The guy obviously had been in, because he would tell me what I was wearing each night. I mentioned it to the deputies that would come by for free coffee and to hang out in the parking lot to do their paperwork. They said the next time he called, if they were there to hand them the phone. Sure enough, the next time he called they had just left. I told him "I'm busy right now with a customer, could you call back in an hour?". Believe it or not, he did! And when he called back my deputy friends were there and I handed them the phone. They told him who they were and he never called again.

I don't scare too easy, of course I was young and immortal then.

Congrats,  nice looking bunch o chicks.  I love barnies and Trisha has some beauties - no doubt.  I've noticed Barnies seem to mature "Psychologically" faster than other breeds.  My young pullets and roo seem to fit right in to the flock sooner than most of the other breeds I raise.  At first I thought it was just individual birds, but now I am thinking its the breeds.  They are of Sound Mind.  LOL  

I think you might be right. When I take them out of the brooder to clean, the Barnies are the ones that are jumping out and exploring, while the rest tend to huddle together.

I sorted through the Barnies to see which out of the 16 I thought were boys. 13 of them looked like boys! A friend of mine took all the "boys," so we'll see how accurate our sexing job was once they get older.

Yay!!!!!  Congrats on the adorableness!  Barnvelders are on my "to hatch with a broody someday" list.    Were the eggs shipped?  From how far?

I actually don't live too far from Trisha, so I made an afternoon egg run out of it. Picked up eggs from Cottonwood, Anderson, and Dunsmuir. She has a great setup, and her roosters are HUGE!
At least they seemed that way to me.

Yup, nice way of saying.............feedstore birds, LOL. Hardware cloth is always your best choice. Chicken wire will work to keep out hawks, it's like tissue paper for racoons, opossum & skunks. But as long as your birds are locked up at night, the chicken wire will be fine to cover their daytime run. Generally even woven flight netting will do against hawks unless they are super determined.


LOL, it looks like that roo is stalking the hen. Always nice to see a mama out with her babies.

Awwwe! Great shot! I love the stalker roo! It's like he's all bent out of shape cuz his chickee mamma is all about the babes now and not him!

She has begun weaning them I think. She keeps trying to roost at night, she has started laying again and she frequently ditches her babies to do as she pleases lol.

I have two updates. First all 14 duck eggs hatched the were in lockdown. I set 15 but one of them did not developn

The farmer that picked them up today was impressed with how healthy they were compared to store poultry.

Second update: The Rat Zapper I bought last week got a rat tonight! It was a big sucker too. I originally baited it with Black Oil Sun Flower Seeds but that did not work for two nights. This afternoon I used cat food--the kind from Costco that has Fish meal in it. Bingo!

Holy moly 14! That is amazing! Did you get ANY cresteds??

We've had Blue Jays in the past but lately I've been finding evidence that an egg had been eaten. I found one of my hens in there two times, thought she was laying but I think it was her. The last time this happened I added lots of pine shavings and it stopped. I added the pine shavings yesterday and no dried yoke on today's eggs so I think adding the cushion helps.

And the drama continues...There are some days that I am so discouraged that I think about rehoming all of my chickens. Sigh... One of my little 4 wk old OE chicks is sick again. The 6 days of treatment with Sulmet for Coccidiosis ended last Thursday. Since then, they have been getting probiotics and electrolytes in their water. All have been healthy and thriving. Then this morning, when I checked on them, I heard a big sneeze. It was one of the biggest OE chicks. I'm pretty sure he is a he! When I picked him up, he was gurgling/crackling so I immediately separated him from the rest of the chicks. He is kicking back in his own private cat kennel with food and Denagard in his water. He doesn't have any nasal discharge or any signs of eye problems. He just sneezes occasionally and sound horrible when he breathes. I haven't seen him eat at all and I have twice given him medicated water by syringe being careful to drip it on the end of his beak so he wouldn't aspirate it. I just checked on him and found a large bloody poo. Coccidiosis, again? I have been feeding them King natural starter crumbles dry and also fermented. They do make a mess with the fermented feed and I waited an extra day to clean out their brooder so it was day 3 on the same pine shavings. Does it sound like a respiratory infection or maybe mold? The other chicks seem fine but I am dosing them with a preventative dosage of Denagard. Any advice for me?

I'm sorry you're struggling with this. I bought 6 Marans chicks in the fall and within a few days, they started dying. First they didn't grow like the others..you know how quickly chicks grow. They would eat and run with everyone but were tiny. Then you could hear the clicking in their breathing and then they'd die. I sent the 3rd one to UCD and they said it had black mold. Their poops looked normal, no blood. Hope you figure it out but if it doesn't make it, I'd send it off to UCD to get some answers.

So I have some good news. I candled my 25 eggs last night. Only one looks clear. Looks like it was barely developed but quit but it's clearly empty. The one I posted a picture of last week asking if it was a bloodring turned out developing. I think one of the Polish quit a couple of days ago or it's just small, the same with one of the Marans. Otherwise they're all full of chicks best I can tell. I even saw several of them moving and one I could make out the head, the eyes and the beak! They go into lock down tomorrow. Do I lockdown at the same time I set them? I set them at 8pm so do I have to wait until tomorrow night to lockdown?

I'm having a sleepover with our 2 year old, two 4 1/2 year olds and 6 1/2 year old grandkids on Saturday so they can see them hatch! Should be fun!
