California - Northern

I think they would. Some have had problems with rain getting into them. Likely the direction they face would be a factor. Also, Make sure the tarp is secured well for wind.

I like it!
Maybe covering the entire thing with a tarp during the winter and only half of it during the rest of the year will solve the rain problem. We are also thinking about eventually replacing the tarp with corrigated roofing panels. Maybe I can find some of those on craigslist!

ditto or extend the tarp to the front and leave the front open.
You can also price pond liner. It will cost much more than a tarp but will last longer.
Or corrigated roofing . start at the bottom on both sides and work up. when you get to the top put a peace over the seam. the vinyl type is best and will last for 20 years or more
LOL! We are thinking about using a tarp for now and then replacing it with corrigated roofing! The pond liner is a good idea. Thank you for the suggestion. It's a new thing to search for on craigslist!

Now that the membrane is gone there doesn't seem to be much extra liquid at all. I'll be keeping an eye on him throughout the day.

This is quite stressful being a first-timer but the wisdom shared by everyone in this thread gives me the courage to conquer my squeamishness. I can't thank everyone enough for their help!

Score! I love craigslist! And that hoop coop looks adorable!

Update, egg #5 has pipped! So far 5 of the 7 ameraucana eggs have had action, nothing from the buffington or grocery store eggs yet...
Yeah! Go, upside down chickie!

I do love craigslist! In the last two days, I bought a big dog igloo for either my dog or chickens for $25 and then all these cattle/hog panels for $175! I better stay off of craigslist for a while!

OK, checked for at least a pip before leaving for work around 11am and I found one! And it's one of the Blue Copper Marans eggs!

First I thought it was a scratch on the egg and then the egg moved! Finally got the flashlight to the right angle and could tell it was a pip. I don't get off until 6!

You know what might work for the sides is shade cloth. My husband made some panels to hang on the sides of my lower chicken pen. It has a roof, but the rain would blow in. When the weather is good I keep them rolled up and when it rains I can lower them like a shade. They let some air through for ventilation but keep the rain out.

Hmm, one of our Buff Orpingtons (almost five weeks old) seems to be going downhill fast. They all seemed fine yesterday and this morning when I took them outside she looked pale compared to her sisters. Then I noticed her off by herself kind of puffed up. I held her and she was very docile. Too docile, you know what I mean? I went out later and same thing. I brought her inside to make her and egg and asked my daughter to hold her - Clementine made a "nest" out of a play pot for her and the chicken is just sitting quietly in the middle of the living room in it, not peeping, not getting up. Clearly not a good sign. I'm worried about her, obviously, but I'm also worried about the rest of the chickens getting whatever is ailing her. What should I be looking for/doing? We didn't get them vaccinated. They were on medicated feed (just went through one bag and then switched to unmedicated. They get scrambled eggs a few times a week and go outside almost every day. They always have chick grit in their food. The people who lived here before us had chickens, but that was over a year ago. Our chickens can go where those chickens were. They had turf in their brooder starting when they were little. Help!

The sweet babes I got from Chickee yesterday :) yay!! My first chickens!
Now I know why you picked Nikon as your BYC name, you are a great photographer!

It was so nice to meet you yesterday and I can tell your going to be a good chick momma. It always feels good for my chicks to go to people who are so enthusiastic about them
