Happy hatching wishes!
I spent some time today reading the sticky noted humidity thread under Incubating & Hatching Eggs. Wow! What a lot of different opinions! I guess that I'm going to have to do some experimenting to see what works best for me!

Reposted b/c I was at the bottom of the page and well...I was afraid no one would see and be able to answer my ???

I am a wreck over my impending hatch. I just don't want to mess up and bake anyone. I wanted to incubate and hatch during the waxing moon because the Old Farmers Almanac says it's the best time and since I am doing this with shipped eggs I figure it couldn't hurt . Full moon is the 27th I am going to set on the 6th. I won't be home the1st-4th so want to iron out all kinks this week but the bator is in my daughters' room and they are home for Easter this week. Therefore, the conditions in that room are not what they will be during incubation. Hoping that I have got things close enough to right to pull it off.

Re the plugs. Have any of you experienced hatchaholics used them to regulate temp like Renee talks about in her "Cheat Sheet" I have had mine out the whole time I have been fiddling with the LG.

I think this may be my only time using an incubator. I am getting Speckled Sussex, Easter Eggers, and Partridge Rock chicks and hope to pick up a couple of Kim's Dorking culls later in the year so

I should get a couple of broodies shouldn't I???....My hatch will include some Dorking eggs too as well as a bunch of unknown "hen's choice" coolness. I think I may not have the "attention to detail" gene that broody hens do.

Took some photos of the chickies. Warning! There are a lot! I have Barnevelders from Trisha, misc Marans of unknown quality/purity from a CL ad, and Easter Eggers from Azriel on BYC. To quote Azriel, "I have pure Blue, Black and White Ameraucana as well EE , OE, and Marans hens in with Black Ameraucana, Blue Copper & Black Copper Marans, and an EE roos." I'll try to ID which chicks came from which eggs, but I'm not 100% as my breed IDing skill is pretty non-existant. I think all of the white/yellow chicks came from Azriel's blue eggs.

Ao precious! The patterns on their wings are so pretty!

This thread moves quickly some times! This will give you a bump and someone should have some answers for you. I have a Genesis and I was told to just leave the plug out the whole time so that's what I am doing. I do have a length of aquarium tubing inserted through the plug hole and down into section 1 of the water tray. I am using a syringe to add water through the tubing as needed. My incubator is in my Spare Oom with my brooders. The heat lamp is on in their during the night so the temps are staying fairly constant.

The Genesis has one plug--I never use the plug. Oxygen is important for the eggs to hatch.

Renee seems to know how to use an LG incubator so give her cheat sheet a try, take notes and adjust for the next hatch.

Another noob question:
hide.gif
some of my chicks have tiny little combs, and some don't really. The eldest are only like 9-10 days old but even the 4-5 day old chicks have them. Like one has a more pronounced comb then its companion of the same age and breed. Is this any indication of sex or just some growing faster than others?
