She is almost a year old. Hatch day 5/14/12. Yes she has lain eggs in the nest box and I can't always tell whose are whose are whose but am pretty sure she is only giving me a couple of usable eggs a week. She will go sit in the nest box for around an hour and produce nothing.

That sounds about right for double yolk layers. Poor things need a break!

They have to produce two eggs and each egg takes a day so each double yolk egg take a day off of laying. A triple would take three days. My Marans that lays a 75G single yolk egg lays about 4 of them a week and I do not mind that a bit!

Keep a close eye on her--she may develop some reproductive problems.

I am thinking maybe it is easier for her to "lay" them where ever it is easier for them to come out. Is she on the roost when she drops them or just sitting in the tray?

That is one giant egg and it is probably very difficult for her to lay. The fact that the shell is a bit thin may actually be helpful in getting it to fit through the egg duct. A little more malleable than a hard shell.

That is just a thought, but by no means scientific.

sorry forgot to quote Tommysgirl's comment.

Hi Deanne!

I was thinking of you today when I opened a box of Fertile eggs! You could teach some sellers a thing or two.

Look at what I got today:

Shipped in a small box and the eggs placed in the box inside a cut up foam egg carton:

The eggs on the inside of the carton are wrapped in tissue:

Enough of that!

You should have an easier time hatching the Marans eggs. They are crossed with Little Pedler so the will not have the hatching problems from the US Marans. Those are too inbred to hatch well in most cases.
I just died! I wonder if this is their first time packing eggs?

That's actually cool to know!

Urg!!! Why even bother taking the time to raise chickens if you are going to treat their eggs like this? If any one can hatch the surviving eggs ... you can.... good luck!!!

You know me! I will be giving it the best shot I can!

I sent a pm. hopefully we can get them shipped better in the future. The person is really great so I hope we can get the shipping down--It would be a big help for their business.

Thanks Ron. That makes sense. She is running around today as though she did nothing miraculous. She has done double eggs before...one shelless on top of a shelled and a couple of times weird leather shelled embryo shaped things joined by a cord. I can predict when a weird thing is going to happen based on if she has had a usable egg within three days. She is a funny funny personality filled sociable girl so even if she layed nothing she would still be pecking around the yard.

No wonder everyones pics look so good! You are all pros!!!!

I was beating myself up over the pathetic pics I get. Lol

Don't beat yourself up! We all start somewhere

I love all pics of our birds. I am a HUGE nerd so I hope I never make anyone feel bad. I am always playing with my lenses, lighting, settings and then editing. It all is a part of my business so everything I shoot with my big girl camera gets 'star' treatment because I share them on photography forums, my facebook pages and I since I have so many photog friends on my Facebook the pressure to do this is really high. I don't want people who buy what I sell to lose confidence in me or what I produce. Don't beat yourself up. I won't say how much money all my crap cost me but it's much more than the cost of a nice point and shoot camera. <3 I recently figured out some people want to buy some of my chicken/duck photos (blows my mind) and that is really awesome for me! More incentive to try hard haha!

I'm the same way. Totally my own worst critic, give me a week and I will not like any of the photos I just posted.

and will be trying to outdo myself.
