I love black and white photos, but quality color photos can be amazing too. Like some of them on here the picture detail is so sharp and clean. I am looking into the pallet option too, just because someone has access to 9 pallets for free. Wood is pricey and the cheaper I can get it the better. I did see on here under the coops page somewhere that someone did just that. Used the pallets as the walls and put plywood over it, and then used the gap in the plywood for adding insulation and then plywood inside so they didn't peck at the insulation. I can't imagine how heavy that would be. But it looked good when they were done.

I don't think I need to worry about insulation, do I? "Redding's coldest month is December when the average temperature overnight is 35.0°F. In July, the warmest month, the average day time temperature rises to 98.5°F."

Shoot my temp coop right now is chicken wire/hardware cloth all wrapped in tarp. 1 solid wall. My chickens did fine!

haha average day time temp made me giggle. July/August is usually straight triples with some 90s sprinkled in. It gets darn hot here! I had a Marans die last year from heat and a few struggled but survived with intervention.

Yeah, no kidding. The heat here is ridiculous!
I've been debating doing at least 1 wall of just hardware cloth, but I'm scared that predators might be able to get at the chickens if I do that.
How did you keep your birds cool in the summer? It's been a concern of mine.

There's no question in this post.....because there's no question they're cuties!
Sorry about the backlighting but needed to take quick pictures, I was late for work!

Olive Eggers ~ 4 of the 5 pullet eggs from my Blue Copper Marans Hatched. I didn't count on any of them since the girls had only been laying about a month.

These are from my Australorp. First time I've hatched any of her eggs.

My cute little Polish! They're also from young pullet eggs, so tiny still.

What color will this one be? Chipmunk pattern but really yellow. However, if you lift the feathers up, it's dark.

This one I'm not sure of either. Broodies hatched a silver penciled last year but I didn't spend a lot of time with chicks since the broodies had them so I don't recall what the chick looked like.

This chick is pure white with ever so small black on the tips of some of the feathers. I had two white roosters hatch last fall and just sold the last one so one of those boys could be the father, instead of my Ameraucana Silver Roo. I think he'll be white and carries the dominant white gene. Any ideas?

all four walls of my coop's run are nothing but hardware cloth, and in nearly a year's time, nothing has caused any problems at all -- and i live up on Sonoma Mtn, with all manner of foxes, coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, skunks, and ETC around. Hardware cloth was worth the investment, nothing has gotten through it.

Should I leave some of the coop walls open as just hardware cloth? It gets HOT here, triple digits in the summer. But doesn't usually get below freezing in winter.
