I'm glad you asked about vaccinating, I'm considering the same thing and this forum is the perfect place to get input from the experts.
Your daughter's drawing is precious!
And so many fun eggs!!! What breeds are you incubating?

Deb one of the Easter Egger chicks you have me a few weeks back is crowing already. I thought a cat had had its tail shut in the door. Nope little special easter egger crowing away

I don't think you'll be getting blue eggs from that one,

Oh gosh that chicken is so cute, I don't know why I love the awkward stage so much..they just look so adorable..
I'll tell him you said so. I think he's a little sensitive right now, he gets picked on. He mostly hangs out with the sweet polish girl I'm pretty sure is not all there mentally.

Is there any particular way I should distribute the eggs? Originally they were a little more uniform but two of the store bought were seeping so they were tossed.

Some people don't like to put an egg next to the turner motor. It tends to be slightly warmer there. I tried to keep mine towards the center. Were you also asking about when to cull, or was that someone else? As a total novice, I waited until Day 12 before I made final decisions. It was really obvious which ones were clear or had blood rings by then.

Look what arrived yesterday from SunnyDawn! I wish the picture showed just how dark they are....they are amazing! Gotta clean the incubator and get these going. Sunny and I are working on a dark egg project. They arrived all safe and sound and beautifully packed!
WOW - those really are some chocolate eggs! Beautiful!
All the credit goes to SunnyDawn, these are her eggs and I've just begun working with her. Nice place for me to jump in huh?
Those are some awesome eggs. My mom is upset that I didn't order a chick that'll lay really dark eggs. I would have, but I ordered from McMurray and he was sold out of all the dark egg-layers!
Just remember that most likely, hatchery Marans won't lay as dark of eggs as the ones from Sunny or if you got them from a breeder. Some Marans can lay a very disappointing brown egg. That's why Sunny and I want to work on egg color.

Thank you! That was me. I actually ended up moving the egg that was by the turner, good thing it was small! It was wedged in.

So, candled for Day 7 and I am amazed how many of them are developing. I only had five out of 34 that were question marks, and they were all very dark shells. Every other one showed veining, and in a few there was even a baby moving a bit. Sadly, one of these was put in upside-down.

The aircell was at the end pointing down. Did I doom this baby to pipping and not being able to get air? I'm so sad. What, if anything, can or should be done?

Another egg is developing but has a small hole in it. What should be done with that?

Thanks!

I've put them in upside down before and if caught early they seem to do fine. I would turn it around and hope for the best.

I would remove the one with the hole. If bacteria gets in there the baby will not survive and worse yet the egg couple break and possible ruin your hatch. Some people put wax on the hole but personally I would not take the risk unless it is a super rare and hard to find egg. Which, if these are my eggs.. its not. LOL

Chiquita you have been so helpful with my questions about the quail. I feel useless not being able to repay when it is clear you are sad.

I feel sort of stupid even mentioning this but here it is anyway. I had a cat that became lethargic and anemic (gums were white). He seemed fine in every other way. Continued to eat etc. but just started sleeping more. A week or so later I felt a very large tennis ball size lump swishy too in his abdomen. The vet said it was cancer most likely in either the stomach or liver. Probably the liver because he kept eating.

I know chickens and cats are very different, but the whole squishy lump thing reminded me of my cat.

I hope the antibiotics work for you.......

That was very sweet. Thanks for all the advice. I'm debating seeing if I can get fluid from her mass. Flock watcher thought she sounded like an internal layer. We gave her a warm bath last night and she did squat for it. Mario too a pic of the mass, I'll have him post it. I'm not holding any hope out really just didn't want to miss anything.

I'm still sick enough to be not all there.I'm surprised I haven't coughed a lung, this stuff is ridiculous.
