I just posted this in the Bay area thread when I thought that I was in this thread.

My black Australorp head hen names Precious is broody!!! She started pancaking earlier this week and has only come off the nest once or twice a day. She was broody off and on through the whole summer and fall the year before last. I'm convinced that having my grow out chicks within earshot of her gives her ideas of motherhood! She has never sat on real eggs but has tried her best to hatch a wooden egg! One time we gave her 3 day old chicks to raise after she had sat over 30 days on that wooden egg. She was a fantastic mommy and completely integrated her babies into the flock. Today, I slipped 4 fertile eggs from the farm into her nest while she was on break. She is happily sitting like a black pancake on top of them. 2 are Langshan eggs and 2 are Langshan over Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock eggs. That's going to be an interesting mix. I wanted all Langshan eggs but my friend missed my email and they ate them all for breakfast! I just hope they are all fertile or I'm going to have a very disappointed hen!

This is great! One of my Australorps, Buckbeak gives me the stink eye and growls while making all her feathers stand on end when she is on the nest but she hops off when she's done. She cracks me up. She started out a little slow in all ways by comparison to the others but now she is one of my top two.

Thanks for the information. I don't know how much Tractor Supply is, they are cheaper than Home Depot and Lowe's which is odd as Home Depot owns Tractor Supply.
I looked online at Tractor Supply. All they had was 2 in and 1/4 in hardware cloth. They also didn't show it in longer rolls. Maybe I'll call the closest one in Dixon to see if they have the longer rolls of 1/2 in.

That is a great story!

I hope you get the eggs to hatch!

Me too! We didn't even get one pen finished today but I did get to see all of my Langshans, SPPRs, and Bresse trio! I took them treats and spent quite a bit of time with them. Exciting news! Both of my Bresse pullets are laying and they are fertile!!!! We are going to set some of the eggs in another week or two when they have increased some in size. YEAH!!! The first breeding pen we complete is for them!

Quote: There were actually three, but I think they were on Confessions of an Animal Hoarder. DH and I both agreed that people would say we qualify, because of numbers. But our animals are well cared for. They've had people on the show that had exceptionally well cared for, but people called them hoarders because of the number of pets.

One lady did sell eggs, but didn't keep track of fresh from "aged". She had eggs everywhere and didn't want to get rid of her chickens, she claimed they were a source of income.

One was a man that had all his chickens free ranging inside his house. He said they were his friends. His family convinced him to move them outside (reasonable), but told him to have more than 2-3 was nuts (I thought they were unreasonable).

The last is the one I think Ron was talking about. She was the nastiest, most cranky-pants woman I've ever seen on the show. She had poultry live and dead EVERYWHERE. Layers of them in old cages inside her trailer. Lame rabbits, goats, sheep, you name it. Horrible nasty, toothless old woman.

I will contact the person with the BAs Monday--she said it would take a couple of weeks to get her pen set up and then I will go pick up hatching eggs from her. I will let you know when and the arrange getting some Jaehorn hatching eggs!

the two green eggs I got from Chooks Chick are.......Chocolate mauve Ameraucanas or I guess EE since they don't fit the standard. Can you believe that? I am so tickled about all of the eggs but if they all hatch they will only fuel my addiction. Plus Chooks Chick is as far as I know the only source for a couple of these breeds/colorations since they are her projects so if I fall in love she will have to be my dealer...I mean source.

So far the hatch is going well. LG is holding temp. Since it has been damp for the last two day outside I assume the humidity is OK. Hygrometer broke...does incubator warehouse have good customer service? The digital display becomes illegible. I changed the battery and it was OK for awhile but as soon as I put the eggs in it whacked out again.
