Question;
If I put a hen in with a roo and the hen has already been fertilized recently by a different roo, will the new Roos sperm override the other?

Confusing. I have my easter eggers together now But would like some olive eggers. So I want to put them in with my Marans roo. Should I just wait the 3 weeks to be sure?

No, that is an Urban Legend LOL. Wait three weeks--It takes that long for the older sperm to die. Until it dies, it is survival of the fittest inside the hen....to see which roosters sperm gets there to fertilize the egg.

First in First out is a silly idea.

Ty for the tips! I will try them both. MY big girls dust incessantly, so they are always good, but the Little's and the silkies do it infrequently little rats.

I have been using the strips for a year now. They work great, are cheap and last a long time. I have had no mites or lice since using them.

Russia (Clementine's): Chocolate (also Clementine's): Aren't they gorgeous? Even more so in person. Hard not to smother them with kisses. Our big girls are moving out to the coop tonight. Yay! I'm excited. I keep thinking I see more Buff Orpingtons hunched up like Alice, but so far I think I'm wrong. Hopefully. I'm going to call on Monday if I haven't heard from UC Davis. Hoping everything is okay.
Oh gosh, so cute <3<3

wait 3 weeks to be safe or you will not be sure
My hatch is done too!

The 4 that were left did not pip and only one had a fully developed chick inside. The Genesis goes into the shower for a cleaning tonight and then Monday Black Penes go into it. They will be close enough in age that they can Brood with the BAs.

Moving chickens around soon....again......
go black pene's

good idea

so I had 1 more die last night. In the brooder pen the little 1/2 emp 1/2 partridge pene that was the last to hatch and was not doing well. she was seemingly getting better but smaller than the rest. she looks like she got trampled possibly poor thing

Agreed. I watched an episode with a Hoarder that had chickens. She had and incubator but did not use it. She had rotten eggs all over her trailer and did not take care of her chickens. She also did not sell any eggs or chickens.

I am sending four to a farm tomorrow to start breeding with Megans Rooster. See I can give them away too. I just have too many of them.....

I had no idea they had a Episode with chickens...LOL

I will be a new chicken mama this weekend. The finishing touches are happening on the coop and run as I type, and we should be able to pick out our pullets this weekend. We are in Santa Rosa, CA. I love having the great resource....and to have such an active "local" thread!
Howdy!

I'm in Santa Rosa too. Also waited a long time to get my chickens and I love them. Western Farm Center will have started pullets later in the season. Usually gold sex links and barred rocks, maybe buff Orps. They are hatchery quality, but great layers. Definitely let folks on this thread know what you're looking for. They are all serious chicken enablers! So many cool breeds that I would never have heard of if not for reading here.

I brooded sexed chicks in the garage. It wasn't too hard and they grow fast. In our mild temps, they can go outside as soon as they're feathered, 4-5 weeks. Let me know if you want to try it. I might have some stuff to loan you. (Good thing I'm not an enabler!

but will be interested at some point to try hatching a Daisy/Max cross, to see what happens when you mix black australorp with swedish flower hen!
Haha! That sounds like a very international mix!

Laura, we took the kids to Alcatraz a few weeks ago. Saw this little tub putting around in the bay.
