I will post on top for you!

Granulated sea kelp and Big Ole Bird from Southland Organics help harden the shells. You can also mix some Food Grade DE into their food. That is a better source of calcium.
The bresse eggs are getting lighter. My issue is I'm still getting shel less eggs every few days they eat a ton of oyster shell.

I freaked out too because they say white in the descriptions. But no one seemed worried about it so I calmed down.

It is much easier to reply on top of quotes on the phone. No multi for me in the phone anymore.

Looks like we may be adding basques to our group up here! Unbelievable good fortune, just hoping I can hatch them out. DH was good with breed choice, he did roll his eyes at more coops, they have to grow up somewhere. I'll know more next week, going to be a long week.

Look, I quoted myself!

I should add that when the eggs harden up and the soft one are not being laid, no more DE. The Cockerel can handle some calcium but long term it is bad for him.

just so you guys know you have me wanting the following:

Marans...pretty much any color
Barnvelders
Basque
BLUE Australorps
Brabanters
SFH
anything Frizzled
Langshans
Sliver Penciled PRs
Icelandics...

and the list grows. Hopefully the hatch will net me some Dorkings and Chanteclers so they can be removed from my "Pre Nor Cal Thread Wish List" or we can add them to this list too.

And to think a couple of months back I was going to be keeping it simple by adding a couple of broody breeds a white egg layer and some EEs to my flock.

Keep it simple......that seems impossible now doesn't it?

Hello!  I'm new to backyard chickens and new to incubating eggs...does anyone out there know about Barnevelders fertile hatching eggs in the Sacramento area?  I know Trisha up toward Redding, but wondered who else out there loves Barnevelders :).  Currently, I have 3 Amercaunas, but am hoping to hatch some Blue Copper Marans and then in early May some Barnevelders.  I'm so excited to have found this site!

Welcome 18peeps, this is a fun place to hang out.. :)

i've spent the morning watching the chickens negotiate for spots in the nesting boxes -- with two broodies and only three boxes, things often get crowded. question: should i offer an additional nesting box or two for the interim? i have a couple of wooden boxes i could set up inside the henhouse -- don't really have a separate space to move the broodies to, and don't really want to force them to move anyway, but am a little concerned some eggs might get broken with so many girls all trying to crowd in at once...?

Here is what I am setting today..... I went over to Deann's at JustStruttin' yesterday and am now all confused about what I have!

We talked about all kinds of chickens and then I came home with about two and a half dozen. I had ordered some "Wheaten Ameracauna" eggs from another BYC'er which came in the mail. So I am not anticipating a lot of those to hatch because they were shipped, She sent me 15 though so, hopefully I will get at least one hen out of that.

The others are English Orps, Polish, Welsummer, Cream Legbar's and an Olive egger project and some DBLL's. I don't usually use the abbreviations because I have such a hard time deciphering them. lol But DBBL? DBLL? DLBL? Heck I can't even remember now and I am too lazy to get up and look at the egg that Deann wrote on..

I am keeping my fingers crossed on the English Orps because she said she has been getting A LOT of Roosters......

, and I have only a few of those in there.

See this wasn't what I had planned..... as you can see I have TOO many eggs for the turners, but I am certain some will not develop at all so I will be able to fit them all soon.

Can someone remind me at what day I will know for certain there is no development? Day 10? or Day 7? Hatch day????

And this pretty little scale I found at Costco just yesterday. I didn't have a kitchen scale and have been looking for one ad this one was $10 cheaper than the one I saw at Target that I liked. So $19.99 not too bad. Goes up to 11 lbs.
