California - Northern

Look at those legs! The Rooster in the pictures with the hens has the most beautiful tail! It makes a teepee in the back like my HRIR pullets have!

I told megan she needed to show him. He is amazing! And those Pit Pintas......

Dang Ron, you are making my math get better and my gotta have list longer! Now, how about some information on both breeds?

I had all my hens in my house once. Our 50+ foot eucalyptus tree fell on our garage in November (During that crazy storm). The tree was resting on the garage, but the fire department said it could fall throught at any time, and we couldn't get anyone to come and cut up the tree until the following morning. If the tree did fall through the garage, it would have also smashed the chicken coop. I had to gather up all my hens and put them in the spare room inside (now called the chicken room).

oh my gosh!!

Hmm, we have two buff orpington roosters. They're so sweet, just a little over a month old. We were planning on keeping them both, but let me know if you don't find one. We have quite a few little boys running around so I wouldn't mind one going to a good home. They both sit on my shoulder and arm and talk to me. Very sweet boys.

One of my black pullets pecked me in the mouth yesterday and made my lip bleed and Gilbert, one of the BO roos, ran over as soon as he heard me cry out and jumped up on my arm and then sat on my lap for about 10 mins making little trilling noises.

Thanks for the extremely kind offer! And I may just take you up on that. Right now we have our hands full with the ducks and the geese on the way. We are busy constructing the pens and various coops AND planting (we're a bit behind this year ). I'm guesstimating we will be ready for new chicken friends in 4 - 5 weeks. Is it ok if I message you around then (assuming I don't find a boy on my own) ? Sorry bout the lip :( At least your lil fella consoled you. What a sweetie!

Hey all! Just got back from a trip to Southern California. Thought of you guys as I was passing various towns and cities. "Oh! So and so lives there!"

After being away from the chicks for a measly six days, I'm amazed at how much bigger they have gotten. Combs have popped up on some, and the feathers are coming in nicely. They are only three weeks old! There are several that I am hoping will be girls, because they are gorgeous! Much friendlier now that they are older and know where the treats come from.

Before we left for our trip, the nectarine tree was in full bloom. The kiddos loved picking a blossom, giving it to the chickies, and watching the chase ensue. This morning, my eldest asked if she cold give them a "pink flower." I said sure! Found out about an hour later that she picked a Bleeding Heart flower (pink) instead of a nectarine. Bleeding Hearts are poisonous, so we are now wondering if they ate enough to make them sick and/or kill them. Any thoughts? It was just one, and I am sure that it was broken into pieces as they played keep away with each other.

I went to Clayton today and picked up my old Rooster Chema from Megan. I got to see the Pita Pintas I hatched and will be posting pictures soon.

Everyone will want them too--they are gorgeous!

Oh NO! whats a Pita Pinta??? Not one of Columbus' ships??

ETA just saw the pics they are quite handsome roosters...a little like mottled Java's...also on my list. Besides being so good looking what do they have going for them? Oh wait don't tell me I am in love with too many chickens as it is.

These are Spanish breeds. The EO Marraduna Basque are not directly related to GreenFire or the Canadian Basque that Skyline has. These are the correct color according to the Spanish SOP.

The Pita Pintas are extremely rare in the US. These may be some of the only ones around here. They lay a Cream white egg and a lot of them. They are also called Astorian Paints and come from That part of Spain.

Both are very friendly breeds and are heat Hardy.

I am getting hatching eggs from both flocks later this year.

OK it's breed ID time if you guys don't mind. The first pic is of the rooster in my uncle's "Red Pen" whose eggs I have in the bator. The hens in there are a Buff Orp, two Golden Comets and a little brown hen who I think is a by mix. I think the roo is a mix too. but here is his pic. He is small. One of the GC girls is quite a bit taller but a gorgeous little guy. His legs are white.

Also on my uncles place are these two in the bachelor pen. RIR right?

Thank you, I think there will be some in my future!

Here is what I am setting today..... I went over to Deann's at JustStruttin' yesterday and am now all confused about what I have!

We talked about all kinds of chickens and then I came home with about two and a half dozen. I had ordered some "Wheaten Ameracauna" eggs from another BYC'er which came in the mail. So I am not anticipating a lot of those to hatch because they were shipped, She sent me 15 though so, hopefully I will get at least one hen out of that.

The others are English Orps, Polish, Welsummer, Cream Legbar's and an Olive egger project and some DBLL's. I don't usually use the abbreviations because I have such a hard time deciphering them. lol But DBBL? DBLL? DLBL? Heck I can't even remember now and I am too lazy to get up and look at the egg that Deann wrote on..

I am keeping my fingers crossed on the English Orps because she said she has been getting A LOT of Roosters......

, and I have only a few of those in there.

See this wasn't what I had planned..... as you can see I have TOO many eggs for the turners, but I am certain some will not develop at all so I will be able to fit them all soon.

Can someone remind me at what day I will know for certain there is no development? Day 10? or Day 7? Hatch day????

And this pretty little scale I found at Costco just yesterday. I didn't have a kitchen scale and have been looking for one ad this one was $10 cheaper than the one I saw at Target that I liked. So $19.99 not too bad. Goes up to 11 lbs.

It was great meeting you yesterday. Sorry, I blabbed on and on. No wonder you are confused. I think we talked about every breed under the sun. LOL

Regarding candling, I always candle on Day 7. You will be able to see what is happening in the light eggs. The Welsummer eggs are very dark and thick. I don't candle them until day 14. If in doubt - hold out. That's my motto.

wow, that is a really really scary picture!! Sounds like you risked your life getting the birds out of the coop considering the tree could have fallen at any time.
