California - Northern

That is so nice of you!

Sneezing is not good. It is not the worst symptom but they should not sneeze. It is great that Chiqita is getting the oxine to you soon and let us know what the UCD Report says.

I forgot to mention, too, that I have seen a few really watery poops, and some look kind of like spit. Like they have some bubbles. Oh man, my poor babies are a mess, aren't they? So that would speak to worms, right?

Ugh, I feel sick. Partly because I had two cups of coffee and no breakfast, but mostly because I just called and got the report - no parasite eggs, nothing about cocci, but apparently a large number of e-coli (I had them test for that, too). How did this happen? If I remember right I need to be giving them yogurt and probiotics? I'll ask in the Diseases etc forum, but does anyone know anything about this? We have ducks and bantams and then the new baby silkies, too. The babies are inside only and we've been very careful about biosecurity. The bantams have been in with the big girls and go outside in the garden area with them and the ducks. We just put the big girls them in the coop last night. So what should my course of action be as far as feeding, separating and cleaning/disinfecting? And for the sneezing?

I hate feeling like I'm not doing right by my animals! I need a hug.

Sometimes they can sneeze from bedding and too much ammonia. Chickens don't get allergies like we do and they to not get colds so cold type symptoms often are bad things.

Sneezing could be something caught in the nasal passage but discharge is bad and so are watery eyes. Bubbles in the eyes are bad too. I would really worry if they seemed to be coughing.
My broody hen came off her nest on Friday for her once or twice a day stretch & eliminate & gorge. I was out scattering some grain for the hens when I heard her sneeze/cough (it sounded like a deep sneeze or combination) 3 or 4 times. My heart dropped when I saw that it was Precious making that noise. So I've been keeping a close eye on her since then. I have not heard her sneeze or cough since then and she has no discharge or eye issues. Maybe she was just clearing her lungs of bedding dust. She lays almost flat in the nest box and I use pine shavings with DE in it. Some of my other hens occasionally sneeze small sneezes. In the absence of other symptoms or increasing frequency/severity of sneezes, I just assume that they are clearing their nasal passages of dust or other irritants.

Here is the report - click to make bigger
This gives you an idea on what to do now. No worming!. Oxine is a great way to start while you look into treating them for ecoli.

You can ask UCD too.

They have been holding on so hopefully they have a good amount of resistance to it.

((((((((((((((Deerling)))))))))))) So sorry you are having to worry so much. Your birds have been very well cared for and this seems like bad luck. It isn't related to your quality care-giving you are doing right by them, it's just that you don't yet know what to do.

The well water question is a good one. Good luck finding out what to do and treating them all.

Deerling, so scary about the e coli, but at least now you know! hoping a good treatment will work...

and my second broody, Frances the SPPR, has now traded in her three fake eggs for 13 real ones! a dozen araucana eggs from Shannon at Die Fly Ranch (she conveniently works in Petaluma, & so brought the eggs to work with her today), plus one from my CL Lucy i just couldn't resist adding. several of the araucana eggs are quite small, and Frances is large, so she's had no trouble tucking them all in under her. and I labeled all the incubating eggs with pencil, so my neighbor will know which to remove if the other girls keep laying in the broodies' nests -- in the meantime, the fake eggs (also now labeled FAKE with a sharpie, so he won't be fooled) have been distributed into the "empty" nests.

so excited to see the girls hard at work! i wish i wasn't leaving town for so long (5 days), but i'm sure they'll be fine without me...

Thanks for the support everyone, it really helps a lot

Are you on well water and if so has it been checked?

We are, it was checked before we moved in in November. There were those heavy rains that flooded everything, so not sure if something could have changed. We don't drink it because it tastes bad, but we do use it for the animals.

The woman at UC Davis said there isn't a way to know if it's normal ecoli or an infection without extensive testing, like ultrasound or nercroscopy. She said Alice may have some kind of internal defect that make her version of normal a little paler and puffier. She was helpful, but didn't have much advice to offer. I don't know

Going to get them some yogurt now. I just want her and my other chickens to all be okay.

Hey All, Any Fresno area people on this thread? I tried asking in the Southern thread, but they seem to think Fresno is North ... I'm still new to chickenses, but am loving my 6 baby girls (lets hope they are all girls) and was looking for some locals to connect with. Cheers! Kat
HeyJane, I'm in Madera. Not too far from you. You can learn a lot on this thread. Most people are really friendly and helpful. There are a few other fairly local people on here too.
